The Rift is coming out soon. Still in the pipeline is HTC's Vive VR system which is different than the Rift since it has several laser sensors that scans the area to place you inside the VR world. In essence, it allows you to move in a limited space. The potential for this limited freedom is great, depending on how creative the developers are. What's the downside? I'm sure processing horsepower will be greater since it now needs to process your movements and translates it into the VR world.

Anyways, watch this video. I see a lot of potential for the future in VR as it relates to FPS games.

After a long wait, the Rift Consumer Version is almost ready for mass consumption. But you have to pony up $600 for the VR experience. That's a hefty price, IMO, to get on the virtual reality train. However, if you've got the $, go pre-order one right now as it'll also put your pre-order position in for the upcoming Touch controller from Oculus. Don't forget to check out their recommended PC specs. It's looking like you'll need a high-end PC build to drive the Rift.
