I dont feel like searching through this forum to find previous suggestions (i tried searching), and i dont trust google searches for programs i dont know about (too worried that in trying to find an anti virus/spyware program, i might actually infest my computer.). Could anyone give a suggestion for the best free anti virus and/or anti spyware program? must be compatible with windows xp pro. Thanks!

AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5) - for antivirus
Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) - for spyware

I run AVG all the time and everytime you restart windows it checks for updates and closes itselft which is nice (Microsoft should learn from this)

Adaware i run once a week and make sure its uptodate before i run it

yeah im not an expert on AV and SW but i have been using these two programs for several years and havent had any problems, no viruses and no laggy computer.

but maybe its cause i graduated with a Computer Information Systems degree and have the mentality that computers are like cars, you have to do regular maintinece to keep em healthy. Thats the problem with the general public, they buy computers and think they can just run them and not do anything to keep them running smoothly. OK need to stop the rant!
