Reputation is a system where users can judge each other's posts. If you make a good post, people can approve of your post which gives you reputation points. When you get so many reputation points, your vote on other people weighs more when you approve or disapprove of their post.

Over time, a good poster will rise up with high reputation marks. And those with crap posts will have very low reputation marks. This serves as an indicator on the "trustworthy-ness" of a poster for readers.

When you rate a thread do the points go to the thread starter or everyone in the thread.

Can you rate a specific person's post within a thread?

EDIT:nm i just found the add to reputation button

What does rating a thread do?Does it give anyone points?

wihadmin
05-08-2006, 05:10 PM
rating a thread gives it stars in the thread listings. It does not give points to anyone. Rating a thread serves the purpose of letting readers know that may they should read this thread bc a lot of people thought highly of it.

I visit another forum that has this exact same style forum. The mods all have like infinite rep power so if u get negged by one of them, u aren't coming out of the red for quite some time. ONly bad thing is u can't rep the same person that often. So when u think Grim on average probably makes about five crap posts per day I can only neg rep him every once in a while! :D

I have to earn more reputation before I can give more negative feedback. I am not sure if WiHAdmin has a more powerful feedback because 1.. he is the admin, 2.. he has much more reputation than I do (which makes his votes more powerful), or 3.. that it is set to a standard -20 per negative.

either way, stating my observations on the rating status atm.

The impact you have on someone elses reputation is directly proportional to the amount of reputation you currently have. The wihadmin account having so much positive reputation can knock off a ton of reputation in one smack... whereas I can only effect you a few points at a time.

Lol... apparently there is a limit to how much reputation you can spread around. But I think I did manage to add to the rep of the majority of the regular posters and people who help others out (whether through guides, or tech problems, or info).

The only thing I'm confused about is under the reputation info for your post (when you click on your own little reputation meter thing) it displays rep given for a post. I understand the Red boxes, and the Green boxes, but whats with the Grey boxes?

I get lots of -rep for pointing out people's stupidity. Like pointing out how their suggestions in posts were actually addressed in the original post, and if they'd bother to read it before telling us all about their suggestions, they'd know it'd already been tried and failed. And it's things like the first bloody post in a thread, too! It's not like someone suggested something that'd been tried and posted about 10 pages back...there were no other suggestions at that point.

I'm a pretty abrasive guy, and I don't tolerate stupidity very well, but I'm far from abusive....and though I don't give a rat's ass about my rep, I do wish that the jackasses who don't like how I say something would lay off the -rep if it meant I'd be autobanned. That's petty and childish. To punish someone because you didn't like their "tone"? Ridiculous.

I see your point, but as you say you don't tolerate stupidity. I guess some people don't tolerate abrasiveness.

So my suggestion is be less abrasive when pointing out someone faults in thier post or logic or whatever you are being abrasive about. :dunno:

It's not like someone suggested something that'd been tried and posted about 10 pages back...there were no other suggestions at that point.

I'm a pretty abrasive guy, and I don't tolerate stupidity very well, but I'm far from abusive....and though I don't give a rat's ass about my rep, I do wish that the jackasses who don't like how I say something would lay off the -rep if it meant I'd be autobanned. That's petty and childish. To punish someone because you didn't like their "tone"? Ridiculous.

after reading this i thought about giving you - rep(i didnt). you are right about abrasive. the key to the forums/community is understanding that behind every online persona there is a real person. i dont know if you have a family, but im sure anyone taking this in real life would - rep you. i get - reps when im abrasive.

After reading the post that linked, I did find it abrasive. You said you apreciated it but your tone was more of the sarcastic type.

For someone who is new to the comunity and does not have alot of posts. Its hard to tell if someone is being sincere or being a wiseass.

Back to your linked post. I could see geting frustrated if that was the 10th or 20th time you answered it , but seeing that was the second person to offer help and you blast them. While you may have thought you were being nice and polite others didn't so they told you what they tought via the reputaion tool.

As with anything first impressions are tough to change. This is a great community the moderators keep a clean forum (no flame wars).

I don't know what you need to do to make people belive that you should have a good reputation.

ps. The I don't give a rats ass on what people think doens't help as well. (not trying to change you jsut my opinoin.

Pretty funny stuff, thanks for the read. I'll throw in my .02 here since I posted in the linked thread.

As long as you're in negative rep then other users might not to waste their time on you. Dr.Death was nice enough to offer a suggestion to you; that is, take his time to construct a reply. Your response to him was condescending and just plain annoying. I hope other players are warned off by your negative rep; realizing that attempting to help you in the future may result in a childish retort.

Cheers sir!

If you simply do not care about your rep then why do you keep goin on about it. When it comes to reading post and getting feed back most people don't want a sarcastic response. Why do you care about a flaw as you call it if rep means so little to you. It also seems to me from all the post's you have made that i have read today that all you are looking to do is start arguements. And yes that is my opinon based on the way it reads. And yes i could very well be missunderstanding. I can tell you that your rep has in no way caused me to take your posts that way. Its the way you wrote it that gives people that perception.

Also, Ive got another question. Whats the difference between rep points and rep power.

Rep points generate rep power. As your reputation increases, your influence over others reputation increases.

No you have missed the point. People put stuff up there and you attach them. Why would anyone need a thread to feel superior. It seems to me that your using the post in the manner in which you are trying to describe everyone else. The way you just came of is childish. You are angry at the fact that people don't agree with you on the subject. We all know there are flaws and we live with them. nothing is infallible. You make it sound as if the rep tool is life or death. as i said above i don't use it to make a choice or descision on post's i read whats there and respond to it. Feel free to pm me with anymore of your comments if you chose not to respond here

if i can put it right, the rep points you get determine the rep power you have. the rep power you have is how many rep points someelse gets +/- when you give it out.

So Im guessing the green bars are your rep power? How many rep points is it for each rep power?

Still got some stuff to get the hang of after being gone for so long.

The lack of comprehension skills around here astounds me. Either that, many of you simply enjoy intentionally misrepresenting things so you can feel superior. Do some of you even bother to read the posts, or do you simply look at the rep and decide you now know what is being said?

You know what? Just forget it. You're either missing the point entirely, or intentionally misrepresenting what's been said. Either way, it's obvious you're only interesting in picking an arguement, and not discussing the flaws in having such an easily abused tool in the hands of anyone who wants it.

i understand what you are trying to say, everyone else does too i think.

however, in anonymous setting it will get used in many different ways.

so if rep is important to you, i guess just figure out how to get it. if you are getting negative rep, you might evaluate what is getting you the negative rep.

or you could just not care about the rep and continue on.

that i dont remember. i think it varies as you get more points.

you can see your rep power number when you log on to the site (represented also by the green bars). you can see your rep points in the user cp.

You can find your actually rep power (how many points you can give/take) on the main page on the bar above the news announcements.

Ah, papasan beat me to it. Disregard :)

So there is no direct relation between rep points and power? As in a set amount of points will not raise your rep power a level?

Multiplex

A set amount of reputation points will raise your rep power. It is a set ratio (and can be changed eitherin the DB config or the rep module config for Vbulletin) and you'll have to ask one of the VBulletin superusers here at WiH what it is currently set at.

Hope that helps. :)

As it is obvious I'm not going to get a fair shake around here, I'm discontinuing my participation in this thread.

How are you not getting a "fair shake" around here? People keep giving you neg rep because half your posts are angry complaints/talking down to people.
