Hardware DirectX Level???

Okay I have a Geforce FX 5900, which I thought was directX9 capable, but when I go to options>advanced...it says that my Hardware DirecX Level is 8.1, but my software DirectX Level is 9.0??? Does anyone have any idea as to what the hell this means? Also my game keeps crashing and freezes with a repetitive sound but no error messages...steam support said creative sound card too far down on the pci bus, but that doesn't make sense to me.

Your vid care is CAPABLE, but not OPTIMZED, as it is optimized for dx8. I dunno anything about sound cards =P

GF 5 cards are DX 9 capable... but Valve decided to make them run on DX 8... you can force DX 9... but you will get some terrible performance since the GF 5 series is pretty bad for DX 9.
