View Full Version : Lock On: Modern Air Combat

I have been rediscovering the joys (frustration) of this game recently. Had to go back to my roots for a bit and play some hardcore realism stuff for a while. BF2 is fun for a quick air combat fix, but I do get more satisfaction out of this game. I like tinkering with the radar to track some bandit 30 miles out and praying your missle hits before they fire one off. I even like knowing what an 'angle of attack overlimit' is and what happens to your jet when you ignore it. :yuck:
Just curious if anyone else plays this game or if you know of any other games that have a realistic flight model. I'd love to hear about em and check them out.
(Just in case - Yes, I do have IL-2 Stormovik)
I play it.
Dude that was one hard game to learn. That radar is no joke. I've been meaning to get back into it, but my 6800 died and while I'm waiting for them to send me a new one, I'm playing with my old 5950, which really can't handle Lomac on high settings. Nor would it do well online, which I'm happy to say has a few more members in it's community now. I remember when the game first came out and I couldn't find any online players.
My 5950 does handle Pacific fighters Merged with no problem. So I've been flying that. What makes me laugh is these guys in BF2 calling themselves pilots. They have no idea what it takes to be a real virtual pilot.
Anyway, when my replacement card comes I intend to get back into Lomac, it's just going to take me a month to relearn the game.

I'd be willing to bet that half the 'pilots' in BF2 would become so frustrated with the phys engine that they would uninstall the game the first day. There are a couple that I think would do well in the game though. I'd be interested to see how they'd do.
I hate to say this but I've never actually flown against a live pilot in the game. The single player is enough of a challenge.
If you ever want to try and do some co-op missions in the future, let me know. I'm trying to get a few more people into the game. Might be fun to have some A-10s/Su-25s tank busting with others flying air cover. I can just imagine the profanity coming from one of the A-10's if a Mig got on their tail. :hehehe:
Just curious, did you ever play Jane's Fighters Anthology? It wasn't as realistic as LOMAC, but it sure was fun to play online. I just wish I had Teamspeak running back then. Kinda wish I had broadband internet back then as well..

I don't know about realistic, but I've been trying to play Heroes of the Pacific on the Xbox. With Pro control scheme, it feels pretty realistic. I think it's also available for other consoles as well as PC.
I'm totally stuck on Pearl Harbor. I have to get in the air and defend a couple of hangars against the Zeroes.

I guess Im biased.. I dont think a console could do a realistic simulation. I've played Heroes of the Pacific on the PC. It is fun, but I can't say much about how realistic it is. Once you play something like LOMAC or Pacific Fighters, you'll understand. I still wont try a carrier landing in Pacific Fighters, Im afraid.. I can do it LOMAC though.
A good example of the realism in Pacific Fighters is the gunnery. Some of the planes have some massive guns on them. When you fire them the whole plane shakes and your aim goes off center from the recoil. Takes a bit to get used to.
BytheGREENtree - I just saw LOMAC at Best Buy.. You could almost buy it for what a month of XBox live costs. Join Me!! :hehehe:

For me, I'm not looking for it to be totally realistic. I'm looking for a mix of fun, realism, and historical accuracy.
I have not played Heroes of the Pacific on Live yet. I do play on Live for PGR3 on the 360.

got it 3 days ago yeah i was frusted after the first day {} this close to taking it back. i'm good at flight sims but it was sooo complicated. so far i have only flown the a-10 and it is so hard. I love the realism though.
(had to get something to match my new $150 joystick)
