View Full Version : Lag or Stuttering issues after latest BF2/SF patch??

First off, this isn't a particular technical/advice question so I figured it belonged here instead.
I'm not sure if its my computer as I just did a ton of driver/bios etc updates or the new patch but I am getting quite a bit more than usual lag and stuttering issues while playing BF2 and SF. My ping is still exactly the same on both servers as it was and doesn't flinch so I know its not a connection issue.
I did have a sound card issue contributing to the stuttering problem that poped up in the past which I just fixed AGAIN, not sure if its because I updated the drivers or if it was the patch but the stuttering is still a bit noticable. Replaced the onboard AC'97 audio with my old Creative Live! 5.1 cause I was sick of all the problems that realtek chip has given me!!! :wallbash:
I have a pretty decent system which should have handled any slight upgrade in performance to the game. I have all my video settings on medium and distance set to 100% I'll post my specs at the end.
So, have you guys noticed this to?
Athlon 3500+ 2.2ghz OC'ed to 2.4 and running cool.
Geforce 6600GT OC'ed and running cool.

Yep, the new patch has caused some frame rate stuttering for me too. Glad to hear its not just me. I too have had some sound card problems... I think I'm just going to replace the damn thing. I don't have as good of a computer as you, but it hasn't had too much of a problem running BF2 in the past. but now I'm having a little bit more stuttering in BF2 and a lot in SF. I wonder what the hell they changed to make the game run worse :dunno: Oh and my ping is the same as it was before. I'm on a T1 line so connection ispeed s not a problem. My computer as it sits now: Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8 ghz, 6600GT, 1 gig of DDR333 (generic stuff though). Nothing is overclocked (yet :D )
Oh and I also have all my settings on medium (except in BF2, I have terrian and effects on high)

Same here, The U.S.S. Essex map on SF is unplayable for me, but my computer is almost as old as I am :bawling:

I know this might be weird, but the BF2 patch actually gave me more FPS??? (Either that or Catalyst 5.11 did....since I upgraded both at the same time.
I now get ~83-90FPS when I used to get around ~78

Everything on high except Textures[Medium] -4xAA

Dunno what to say, but something really kicked my computer in the pants the last 1-2weeks because my BF2 performance is awesome.
This was not meant to gloat, just meant for anyone with a similar system to compare and /or try what I did/didnt.
Also, EAX does not work for me. And never has.

New patch or SF has caused me to be laggy and longer load times. Even turned down my graphics and didn't help. Seems to have something running in background now. REAL PAIN in the butt.

I haven't lagged at all...well maybe once in a great while I'll lag. Here are my specs.
AMD 4400+ X2 Dual Core Processor.
2 Gigs of OCZ Ram.
Regular 7200 RPM HD (160GB)
2 BFG 6600 Video card SLI (Although performance is only running at maybe 1.1)
RealTek Sound Card (AKA one that came with Nforce 4 Mobo)
BF settings.
To reduce the probability of lag I lowered the graphic settings since I could care less about its effects.
1024x780 (I think)
Everything on low for graphics
High Quality Audio

Having everything on high is really not necessary as you don't see a huge difference, but also, having everythign on low does affect your visuals!

Well, don't get me wrong I'm not happy that everyone else is experiencing this, but I'm glad its not just me.
I don't know how much this will be of help to some of you but I heard BF2 has a very bad system of sync'ing the visual frame rates of the game to the performance of the sound card. Basically, if the sound card is not set up right in respect to the game it can cause lots of stuttering issues due to the video card trying to catch up and synch with the audio. I've seen this and I think its true. The original version of this game was very buggy for me with audio, but after the second patch it was very smooth again. Now, this the latest edition it seems my AC97 audio chip for some reason could not keep up with BF2. I tried just about everything I could think of and installed every driver version from now since the chip's release with only minor improvements. Readjusting sound acceleration and switching from hardware to software modes helped but did not make the stuttering go away. Last night I got sick of screwing with it and tried my Creative Live! 5.1 I had in my old 1.gig machine and after messing with it a little noticed a huge improvement. Stuttering was almost gone, and BF2 was back to where it was from the last patch.

How much would a gig and a half cost me?

I noticed a bunch of lag yesterday (Sat 11/26) in the afternoon. Jumped over to BF2 vanilla and it was choppy there too. Other servers were fine. Today seems fine, but there was nobody playing SF #2.

Prior to SF install and patch...no lag. After...major issues on WiH. Lag has been bad to unplayable. I have had similar issues on other servers, but unfortunately for me WiH has been the worse.
Needless to say I haven't played on either WiH server, successfully, since SF came out.
I don't have 2g of ram yet, but that shouldn't be an issue since I never had major problems before.

I had huge issues the other night, frame rate drops, my screen would go black and then come back, problems I never had before SF. I know it isn't my system, because, well, there isn't much room for improvement other than SLI for me:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.6GHZ
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
OCZ 2GB Platinum EB RAM @ 260MHZ 1:1 (2.5-3-3-7)
BFG 7800GTX w/Zalman VF700-Cu and OCZ Copper Ramsinks (500/1400)
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty w64MB X-RAM
Dell 2405FPW 24" LCD Monitor

A lot of ppl in the BF2 community are having these issues. I dont believe the problem has been isolated yet.

Would upgrading my stock sound card to a SoundBlaster X-Fi actually improve my gameplay? I've heard some people say they get smoother gaming due to a sound card. I didn't know if it were possible, but I have been looking at getting a new sound card anyway. I wasn't gonna get the super fancy X-Fi card, just the $130 one(I get it for $80 w/Best Buy discount). If it does truly help though, I'll be all over that next paycheck.

Well, as soon as your offload the sound processing to a dedicated card, you are of course going to see an improvement not only in FPS, but also in SOUND! OH THE JOY!

I have never been really into the sound...I don't know, maybe its because I'm don't play an instrument....I rather spend some mony on a goog videocard.

I just changed my onboard sound to an old dedicated creative 5.1 card I had lying around. I noticed a difference, although not a huge one that fixed everything. I'd say, get the X-Fi card if you want it, but don't get it thinking that it will fix your problems playing BF2 cause I heard others on other forums with X-Fi cards having the same stuttering issues. I think the thing I did that made the most difference to the game was experimenting with different driver versions for my video and audio card. Some of the Nvidia driver versions work far better than others for BF2. I'm using version 81.95 right now and its so far made the most difference. You could also try version 77.30 and 81.94, I heard these versions are working good. But stay away from 81.89 that driver really made game play bad.
