Ok folks, this is how I see it, if you don't like it then post your own! Here it goes:
The commander is one of the most vital positions in any map. The commander has vision of the entire battle and can see where the front line is and is going to be. He has the power to supply his troops, give them cover, and give them radar. This role should not be taken if you wish to fight, you goal should be to find a hiding place and stay under cover the entire map!
FIRST
1. USE A MICROPHONE!!!! A silent commander is NOT a good one!!! There is no way you can type the information fast enough for your squads to be aware!!!
2. DON'T ZOOM all the way in unless a squad leader asks you to. By zooming in you are losing your battlefield vision. Only do it if the squad leader needs you to spot an enemy and keep them aware of where that enemy is going.
3. DON'T use vehicles as you are too valuable to take off time to respawn when you eventually die!!! Also, when you are driving/flying, you can't use your assets, which is why you are commander!!!
Commander Assests
Satellite Scan
This should be one of your most used assests, it gives you an entire view of the battle. You can see where the enemy concentration is, you can see where they are going, and you can relay this info to your squads.
1. As soon as the map starts, or as soon as you become commander, you should scan right away. This will give you an idea of where the enemy is headed.
2. Everytime this asset is recharged you should use it again, you should be scanning non-stop!!!
3. Use the information that you get from your scans to tell you squads where the enemy front line is, or where the enemy concentration is. Using this asset will let you keep a constant eye on enemy movements.
4. This asset should be repaired 1st
UAV
This should not be used for your info gathering, but rather only when a squad requests it. This asset is too valuable to squads, and takes too long to recharge, for a commander to use for their benefit.
1. Make sure you tell your squad leaders to request this asset or it will not be used!
2. Only use this asset at a squads request or when you see them going into a flag
3. It isn't always the best idea to place the UAV in the middle of the flag, I would offset it to the side where the enemy is coming from so that the squad in the flag can see what is headed their way.
4. Repair this asset 2nd
Artillery
Artillery is the most misused of the assets by the commander. Many a commander simply send in the arty regardless of troops or troop movements. This asset should be reserved by the commander and only used when a squad calls it in.
1. Always be aware of your arty status and make sure you let your squads know when it is available or when it is down.
2. Send in arty when your squads request it only. Don't send it in when a squad is in a location unless the squad leader asks for it and they have cover.
3. After a scan if you see a front moving to an undefended flag then arty the flag they are headed to. Hopefully this will slow or kill off the approaching enemy.
4. Don't blind fire arty.
5. Fix this asset last because it is the least affective for helping your team.
Communication
As a commander COMMUNICATION is of the utmost importance! You can never communicate too much on the battlefield. As a commander you should be communicating:
1. When commanding, talk to all squad leaders at once, but call out which squad you are talking to. Example: "Squad 6, there is enemy forces inbound!!!" It is important to say which squad you are referring to and what you want each squad to do by their numbers.
2. Enemy movements, especially the enemy front. As a commander you can usually pick out which is the united offensive by the enemy by using your Sat Scan repeatedly. You should ALWAYS be telling squads where the enemy is in relation to the sqaud leader.
3. You should be telling squads what they are to be doing, defend this flag, attack that one, hang tight, take cover, etc.
4. Always announce to your squads when an asset is available
5. When scanning, telling squads roughly how many contacts you have in their vicinity.
6. When zoomed in on an area, you should be telling squad leaders where the enemy is, or where they are hiding.
Commander Strategies
1. When directing your squads, KNOW their location!!! The worst thing you can do is send a squad clear across a map for no reason other than you want to!!! If you need to send a squad somewhere, make sure you tell them why, or you make sure they have transportation!!! (anecdote:The best ever is when I had 1 guy who was a squad leader be a chopper pilot. The only thing he did the whole game is pick up squads that I asked him to and transported them to other flag locations! It was the epitomy of teamwork!)
2. Always have a few sqauds assaulting and the rest defending flags that you have taken. The best way to win a map is not offense, but rather it is defense!
3. Always have your assets ready to deploy for squad leaders when they ask for it, nothing better to get them to follow your orders than to supply them with what they need.
4. ALWAYS be an engineer! This way, if you need to come out of hiding to fix your asset, you can. Remember the golden rule though, always stay hidden!!!!
5. MAP KNOWLEDGE!!! You should know which flags you need to make the tickets run! On some maps, you can own all the flags except one, and still lose! KNOW YOU CP'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. Remember it is only a game, have fun!
Here are some pics of what my screen as commander usually looks like.
