I want to say that I have seen some good commanding in the past weeks here and there and the one time that I really liked I don't remember who it was, but they did a great job of having squads defend the flags after we took them.
It seems on both side, that after a flag is taken everyone leaves and goes to the next flag and then here comes the enemy behind you to take it back. ROUND and ROUND
Everyone has seen it, where one guy sneaks in behind you and takes the flag by slowly letting it go up ALL BY HIMSELF.
If you are commanding, please try to have someone stay and defend the flags after they are taken.

That was me commanding :D (patting own back). We were playing Shongua Stalemate. I always like to have the full squads assaulting, and the lesser number squads defending. The first round was an unbelievable fight, and we won. The second round I didn't command, and we lost miserably :(
But yes, it is important as a commander to have:
1. A FREAKIN MICROPHONE!!!
2. To know not to send your squads across the map
3. Have a few assaulting squads, and the rest defending
4. COMMUNICATE!!!!

I agree especially about the mic! I don't talk to a commander a lot, but when I do it would be nice if he would answer me.

It can be very difficult as a commander to convince a squad they need to hold back and defend a particular flag. Usually sending a simple "Defend" request just does not cut it. Personally I don't blame many squad leaders for not following defend orders considering how many commanders simply don't have a clue or aren't that into it. If you want a squad to defend a flag the most effective technique I've used is communication. By explaining to a squad leader the exact situation including recon information and promise you will support his position 9/10 the squad will follow your orders at least during the immediate situation. An a emergency situation where no one is guarding the flag the best way to get someone on the flag quick is to announce that the particular flag is under attack, send out a distress call to any nearby squad to get there ASAP.
I agree with Drayu, I will typically assign smaller 3 or less man squads as defenders, sending my 6 man squads and smaller close knit squads to attack.
I deffinetely need to work as squad leader under you Drayu, its going to be nice for a change to run a squad with a decent commander.
