View Full Version : technical gripes about bf2

Don't get me wrong, battlefield 2 is a pretty fun game, but I just have some gripes with it.

My VOIP becomes disabled during gameplay, and the front panel mic input isn't supported by BF2. Now when I say VOIP gets disabled, it means I can't even hear anyone else talk. I mean, wtf, I built this badass computer here, I got this nice headset I just plug in the front, works with everything but BF2. The onboard Realtek 97 audio makes the voice chat go out after about 10 minutes in BF2, and it only does this in BF2.

He's what I'm talking about

That's just some crap. It leaves me with some options, buy a new soundcard and let the onboard surround sound go to waste, leave the headset plugged in the back and have it clutter my desk, or go through the hassle of pluggin in the headset in the back everytime.

I just don't understand why BF2 doesn't support a popular souncard and why it doesn't support alternate mic inputs. But I'm sure no one understands the battlefield patches that make more problems than are solved.

Oh yeah, and what about battlefield vietnam? Doesn't that make this Battlefield 3?

Do you only have onboard sound? Or are you using a sound card and onboard? If you don't have a sound card go with the creative Xi-Fi, I have heard nothing but amazing things about it!!! I mean a 3.4ghz equivalent processor just for sound!!!!!!! The FPS gain would be amazing!!! not to mention the sound! I would also go with the higher end one to get more onboard memory! I know it is alot, but if you want the best, you gotta shell it out! Makes me want to ditch my Audigy2 ZS Platinum and upgrade!

As far as the mic thing goes, I'd either get a USB headset like the Logitech headset I've got ...... you can just plug and play, OR get an extension cord that you leave plugged in. Mount it in a place that's convenient, and just plug in your current headset when you want to use it ....... like you do now. An extension cord should be cheap at the local Radio Shack.

Yeah, I have onboard sound. I just built myself this new computer. Using an asus a8v deluxe board. And the onboard sound happens to be Realtek '97.

And the headset I got is one I bought along with the new system. I spent $20 on the headset, it's not USB. It's a logitech headset though, but it's too late to get a refund on it.

i have the same board as you do, asus av8 and im running the same onboard sound, and i dont have any problems with sound or mic, but i am running a $10 usb headset so that might be the problem

heres what EA said to do on mine if it becomes disabled or it wont work

first go to Start>Run>type"dxdiag">OK
then
Click on the Sound Tab at the top and change the Direct X features to basic acceleration and then click Exit run BF2 and try it if that did not work go back and put it where it was last time

If you have a killer rig, then you should have a sound card, it makes A WORLD of a difference not only in sound, but also in FPS!!!

Well crap, turning it down to no accelleration doesn't do crap. Well, actually, it just makes me ping 200+ everywhere in battlefield 2. So looks like I'm gonna have to get me a new soundcard.

I have a custom rig I made as well. Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe with the same or similar Realtek AC97 audio. I don't have any VoIP problems but I've always had trouble with sound acceleration. Causes a huge problem with all sorts of games, not just BF2. Some games like full accelleration while others like none.
What I might suggest is getting a different driver. There are two different sound drivers you could use. One is the driver you get from realtek's website, the other from asus. THEY ARE DIFFERENT and I have noticed in my experience that the ones from realtek's website are better. Play around, totaly uninstall them and try it again. If you're sure your mic is setup correctly, I'm sure that is your problem.

Alright, I'm gonna have to try basic accel and not no accel. Hopefully basic accel doesn't make me get pings of 200 like no accel did. I'm also going to have to try the different drivers too if this doesn't work.

It would make sense that the drivers from Realtek's website work better, typically the hardware manufacturer is gonna have the latest driver avilable way before the motherboard or computer manufacturer mirror's them to their website.

Yeah, I like that asus a8n-sli board, that's what I used for my friends system I built. I was gonna use the same one for this build, but I already got a pretty good agp card.

I noticed I didn't have any problems with I was running BF2 in windows x64. So I might just have to start booting that up everytime I want to play. Only reason I use plain xp professional right now is because my printer, tv tuner, and wireless lan card wont work with x64.

Anyways, I'll let you guys know what happened in a little while.

Yeah I was using x64 XP for awhile but I really didn't like the fact that half my stuff doesn't work with it yet either. The A8N is the best mb I've ever used - aside from a bad chipset fan which Asus revised and sent to me for free it has been flawless.
Anyway, you mentioned that you were getting 200 or so pings with no sound acceleration?!?!?! That just sounds nuts. I find it very hard to believe a sound card setting would be affecting your flow of network traffic. While I am sure it might be possible for a glitch like this to happen I would say its very very unlikely to be connected, especially concerning Asus and Realtek equipment which are very thoroughly tested for issues like this.
HINT: when having sound issues relating to sound acceleration normally you can achieve your desired results by setting it either total on, or completely off. I've never seen much of a change anywhere in the middle.

Well great, basic accel did the same thing as no accel, made bf2 give me abunch of ping spiked from 200 to 300ms.

Deathcar, it may sound hard to believe but that's what happened. I would join any given bf2 server that I'd ping in the 50's through all-seeing-eye. Once bf2 started up, my in-game pings went from around 40 to 200-300. Quit bf2, turned full sound accel back on, no more ping problems.

Now the game didn't run jerky or anything, just the pings were up in the 200's.

The last thing for me to try is the drivers off of the realtek site. Already tried the ones off the asus site. I'll let you know what happens.

Dr.Death] I'll let you know what happens.
Yeah man, deffinetely let me know. In the meantime I'll try to check out some of the asus community forums and see if anyone else is having similar issues. I believe you when you say that your pings are jumping like that with sound accel, I just find it hard to figure out how the two would be connected. :wallbash: I'll try to look deeper into this problem when I get home from work... let me know what you come up with.

Alright, think I got it fixed. I played last night for a good hour or two, and the voip never went out. I had to use the latest driver off of the realtek site. Unfortunately the site was very slow and kept going down, had to try to download the driver three seperate times during the day to get them, but I finally got them.

This sure is a recent driver, it came out on 10/4/2005. So looks like the new driver fixed it.

Thanks for the help everyone.
