Had to come to work to post this.

I'm not sure why, but my pc has started crashing to a bluescreen and freezing up. It also doesn't play any sound. I was listening to some music this morning, and when I exitted the programs, the header bar of one of the windows didn't close. It just stayed there, even when I went to desktop. So I rebooted. On restart I got a pop up saying it had detected new hardware and asked me to put the install disc in. Since I had nothing new, I couldn't. Another possible clue, when I click on the sound icon down by the clock to check my sound settings, it says something like, "cannot change device to the what you are requesting", or some crap."

Anyway, I need some help. And I can't play games until it's fixed.

Not sure how I'll get it with no PC though. This place is fixin to close for the weekend. :wallbash:

here's what i would do:

1. back up and burn any files of any value to you.

2. download AVG free, get the latest update, and scan your entire computer for viruses. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

3. download adaware, get the latest update, and scan your entire machine. http://download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Get rid of everything these programs find.

What OS do you use?
Made any changes recently, before the problem started happening?

Hmmm...
It might help if I knew what hardware you are using, especially the audio card.
Secondly, have you recently installed or changed ANYTHING on your operating system?
By blue screen error I am assuming you are talking about one of those Windows XP BSOD (Blue screens of death).
It would help if you posted the errors, but in the meantime I'll give you some things to try that might work. Assuming its the audio card causing the problem:

First thing I would do is if you can, uninstall the drivers and reinstall... if that doesn't work, pull the audio card out of the computer and boot, play around with the computer for awhile and see if it runs better. If so, it does probably have something to do with your audio card or drivers. Put the audio card back in the PC and load up the new drivers... NOTE: I would try to get a new driver while your doing this.

If that doesn't work, I would get into the windows recovering console and run a checkdisk. To do this, insert the windows cd, make sure the computer can boot from a CDROM. Let the cd load for awhile, When asked type R to get into the recovery console - looks like MS-DOS. at the command prompt type CHKDSK /p. This may or may not take a long time. After its done, type exit, pull the CD out and allow it to reboot.

yeah, pulling the audio card out to see how it runs is a great idea, IF the problem is with the audio card.

What does it say on the blue screen, assuming your PC doesn't reboot immediately after it pops up? If it is your sound card that's malfunctioning, there's a couple of things you can try:

Reinstall drivers. If that doesn't work, then

Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

Open the Sound, Video and Game Controllers list, find your sound card in the listing of devices, then right click and select 'disable.' If that doesn't work, try fully disabling it:

If your sound device is an onboard chip, go to your BIOS and disable it. (BIOSes vary, you have to hit a key when starting your PC. Then look for something like onboard devices or integrated audio, disable it when you find it.) If it's a stand-alone card, pull it out. If removing/disabling the sound device works, you probably need a new one.

Thanks for the tips guys. I seem to have it stabilized a little. Sound is working again. But, now my games won't initialize. I get this...

This was with the Sims. CS won't start either.

After I got through the whole virus scan and adaware without crashing, it was a little more stable (Did I say that already?), but my games wouldn't play. (Oh yeah, I said this already). Anyway, I kept digging around and finally opened the graphics card control panel. The graphics accelerator slider was all the way to the bottom. As soon as I put it back at the max setting, everything was good.

What changed the setting in the first place is the mystery. I was almost ready to buy a new PC. Super upgraded of course. Got to have my games! :jester:
