Ever since the wonderful CS patch, I can now play for about two or three rounds before I get slammed back to the desktop.

Any solutions? I'm wondering if it might be the new lighting.

I just copied and pasted from their FAQ

Crashing and Lock ups after the 9/23 update
Question
Crashing and Lock ups after the 9/23 update
Answer

We apologize for any difficulty you may have encountered today, with the latest Steam update.

The issues you are seeing may be caused by a number of changes that were made with the latest Steam update.

Below are a few steps that we would like you to try:

Step One: Clean boot to free up memory. (This is especially important on machines that have 512mb of RAM)

When you start Windows, typically there are a number of programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the game. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean boot, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure.

To perform a clean boot:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
* Process SYSTEM.INI File
* Process WIN.INI File
* Load Startup Items
5. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Note: To restore your normal boot sequence, re-open msconfig and place a check in the items which you previously disabled.

Step Two: Try specifying a different DXLevel in Launch Options.

This update replaces any tweaks that may have been made to improve game performance.

If you are crashing or locking up when starting your game, go to the Launch Options for the game and add -dxlevel 80.

Finally, please make sure you have the latest patches for your Video and Sound card drivers.

If these steps do not improve your games performance, please click Ask a Question, describe the issue and the steps you have taken in your reply.

Okay, I realized last night that if I don't have TS running, then I have no problems with DoD and CS. As soon as I load TS, CS:S and DoD:S begin to crash.

I have two gigs of memory and a decent processor. Does this make sense to anyone?

Without reading thru the thread, do you get the same problem if you load and log into TS before starting up CSS or DoD?

Yup... I've tried without TS and with TS. Dod and CS both crazy repeatly with TS in the background, but it's also been since the latest patch for CS:S.

I'm going to try that clean boot thing. I'm hoping it will disable Norton completely, without Norton giving me repetitive pop up warnings that my Norton is disabled and I should turn it back on.

Right now I have to leave it running all the time I'm playing.

Cool!

I'm a little bit concerned, if I need to take Norton out to play CS or DoD. It's like it's taking up more resources then it has previously and depending on what you have up. TS shouldn't take up a large amount of resources, even with the overlay. I'll do some work with my MSconfig when I get home.

Either that or Valve needs to fix it's damn problems. It seems every patch screws something up for someone.

I don't have any problems with CS/S that I know of, or with TS. But maybe if I can shut Norton down DoD will run better. I hadn't ever heard of a clean boot before.

Ok... what are the exact symptoms? Do you start up the game, and after a while of playing, do you get a total screen freeze with a looping sound?
Or are you even getting into the game?
Are you running an ATI card? If so, what drivers are you running?
The reason I ask this is because it could be the exact same problem I was having.
For lots more info on this crash, and a fix.. see my post here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=343747)

I updated my first post to have a link to the fix I found.

I have a nVidia 6800GT. If I have TS up, I can play for about two and half round of CS before it freezes and throws me to the desktop. For DoD,
It either crashes on me to desktop when I, A. Pick a Team or B. After about a round.

So far, if I play without TS, I played for about fifteen or twenty minutes without a crash, but as soon as I closed down DoD and opened TS and tried to get back in. The problems started again.

So I might go ahead and just play without TS or re-download it and try it again. I removed everything at one point just to have it still not work.
