Ok I voted for Lost temple. I wish Id gotten in on this earlier or I would of suggested that really good version of de_rats. ( its not called that) But they had giant huge cans of Heineken rolling around and thats a perfect ten in my book.
EDIT EDIT*****---if de_losttemple is the custom map we played during CAL league last year I want nothing to do with it and change my vote to clan_mill. If its not, then keep my vote for lost temple.

Out of those choices I too took lost temple since it is nicely done, and the map jeff is talking about is called death cooking its a very creative map. But rats maps just wouldn't feel right here.

Get the picture? It's like this: These map rock. I've practiced on them for CAL (Cept temple since it is not a CAL map, but play it a lot on a diff server)

No.. they all don't. Contra sucks, and Jeff agrees.
I'm looking at a couple awesome maps right now. Bear with me.

yep yep totally agree with filthy, contra just plain sucks. That was the one we did in CAL and lost it. If i recall it wasnt an asskicking but we had no time to really practice the map. The whole time salem was yelling his usual " this map sucks ass" .................and I never told him to shut up once because I totally agreed with him. Too many ins, outs, and exits.

aww i LOVE contra :bawling:

Wait a second? Too many ins outs? People complain because there are too little.. never too much!
Anyways, if there are too many in Contra, Clan_Mill would be PERFECT.

I put up Mill simply because its a CAL map and has the highest possibilty of being picked up by valve as a regular map.

Got my 3 picks...
Now, If u really care about custom maps being on the server, take your time to read my analysis. This took me a while, so please do me a favour and read it.
Ok.. there are 3 styles of maps I got lined up. They're all well layed out with great visuals, some better than others in either category.
The first map (my personal favourite) is an urban-themed map that's very spaced out with a strange but intruiging setup that could prove to incite some intense firefights on the streets. This map is the largest of the 3, but the smallest in terms of spacing between bomb sites.
Basically, both teams start on either end of the city scape and have to rush to either bombsite in the core which are only a half a block away from each other near a nicely sized park. Bombsite A is a small ammunitions building, which has 2 entry ways and an unpstairs which is where u can plant.
Bombsite B is just down the street but has around 7 floors, 4 of them I believe u are able to plant on, which makes for some interesting gameplay. CT's need to rush through the building finding the room in which the bomb is planted (there are many). This may sound annoying, but it's actually quite easy to hear the beeping and decide if the bomb is on the floor ur on easily enough. Also, it seems the mapper has increased the time between planting and explosion.
This map has TONS of routes to the site, but gets cramped when u need to enter the sites, which will make for some intense action once the teams meet.
Framerates: I only noticed a little bit of a slow-down once. Otherwise, it runs pretty much as good as any other official map.
File size: 28mb (but it's well worth it)
SCREENS, INFO and DOWNLOAD:

This next map has a more typical, rounded CS setup.. with bomb sites spaced apart on either end of the map. It has great flow and a very clean look with nice geometry and textures. There are many routes to each bombsite, including some that pop up behind the enemy team.
I picked this one mainly because the layout is fantastic.
I have a feeling the majority of you will like this one best out of at least my 3 picks. Go ahead, see for yourself.
Framerate: Flawless. Runs as good or better than any map.
File size: 6.7mb
SCREENS, INFO and DOWNLOAD:
http://www.lanmaniax.com/maps/html/de_lochs.htm
The last map is almost entirely indoors. It's by a mapper called DjBourgeoise. If you don't recognize the name, he made that wonderful de_courthouse map.
This is a hostage rescue map set in a posh office building with a bunch of floors, 2 of them, quite a ways apart, are holding hostages. There are are 2 routes for rescuing hostages, each with 2 ways. One goes up to the roof where a helicopter is waiting. The other goes back down to the main lobby (where u spawn). The layout is pretty damn good in my opinion.
The visuals of the map are equally good, filled with little details. Hell, I don't need to tell you how good it looks, check out the screenshots.
Framerates: No slow down whatsoever.
File size: 23mb (also worth it)
SCREENS, INFO and DOWNLOAD:

Ok.. let me know what you guys think.
And please PLAY the map before you post your final opinion.
BTW, I really like the look of Lost Temple too.

Crookcounty: Too big. I was running through, and this map is ENORMOUS. It's WAY too big. This map would be fun in a 20v20, but WiH isn't 20v20, and is most the time 10v10.
I will try the others and report back.
FiLTHY_SNiPER
08-25-2005, 07:55 PM
Rune... the bombsites are like a rock-throw away from each other. No right-minded CS player would walk around the rest of the map.
Meh, its probably too big a file size anyways.
BTW, I can't find that old mill map.. is it a remake of Nuke? If not, I haven't found it yet.

This is why we don't normally run custom maps. While 10 guys want custom maps, 3 guys want map A, 2 want map B, 1 want map C, and 4 wants map D. If we pick map B, then the rest will say, screw you, we don't like map B and won't play. So now we have a server of 2 guys instead of 10.

But if there's a good majority vote then everything should be fine right?

WiHadmin... how much of an overhead would it be to have a "custom map day" once per week? Say every Wednesday there's one custom map added to the server for variety... your choice regardless of what everyone else wants?
If it's too much of a hassle then just delete this post.
just trying to come up with a solution (not that I care... i like the maps as they are now).

Well, Filthy, the thing about that is if A) You only go from bombsite to bombsite, then it doesn't have a circular feel to it.
I.e. it is straight on. CT ---------- T
However, great maps have a "Circular" flow to it. I can't explain it well, but you can get behind the enemy easily, like in most ofl valve maps. That's why I don't like assault, you can't get behind the enemy, nor Dust. (Granted a few exceptions)
Notice all EVEN maps have a flow to it:
Office, Piranesi, Chateau, Cobble, and etc, these are even maps for the most part because of the fact you can misguide the enemy and get behind them.
I hope this explains my point a little more.
Edit: @WiHadmin, you say that maps can turn people away. I have one thing that can counter that.
When people join the server, and they see awp is disabled, that makes them leave as well.
I guess my real point is, that since I am designing a map with my friend Billy, i've noticed a few things more and have been paying attention to maps more strictly.
I guess i'm just EXTREMELY picky, or just crazy.

i have played this map a lot. its pretty good. i give it a thumbs up.
xcom:
i have played this map a lot. i dont like how Ts can barricade into the office to protect the bomb. it is a hard map for CTs. and wtf is up with the broken elevator? i dont like the endless stairwells.
contra:
i have played this map a lot and i like it A LOT. there are lots of variations in a circle, no dead ends and the sewers give so much more depth to the map. CTs can make it to both bomb sites with plenty of time to spare, but the map is not cramped.
i will never like a map where it is impossible to run from A to B in time. period. double period.

Ya Xcom is pretty cool. But I'm going to go play the maps that have been suggested before I vote.
And yeah Filthy, everyone is impatient as hell. I was lookin for you to post this poll as you put so much work into the last attempt at getting a custom on the server.
So what if it's like 50-50? Or 60-40 could we alternate say once a month or once a week between the two?

It depends on the complexity of the custom maps. Some only have a few files. Some have a hundred files that needs to be install and files overwritten. As you overwrite files, you potentially corrupt the server files and the client files.
For example, OEM CSS uses resource file of build 1. Maker of Map A uses a resource file from build 1 of CSS. No problem. Then CSS build2 comes out. Map B uses resource file from build 1. We install map B onto the server overwriting build 2 resource file with an older version. Map B runs fine. Other maps have problems. Same with the client side. This is why sometimes you get missing textures and stuff when you've installed a custom map onto your clients.

Since wihadmin brings up that point, and I completely understand with everything, I think there should be a few stipulations:
A) The map should be liked by a minimum of 60% of the players, after having a week trial period, the map should be voted on. If 60% like it, maybe it can stay.
B) We should keep statistics of who joins and leaves because of these custom maps. If we are losing too many potential new people, it can be removed. (Maybe too compicated.) However the idea is simple: We look at pyshco stats the day before the map is added. Then the next 2 days should average ~ the same. (Could work on the ruling.)
C) The map should have little to no custom textures. As this, like wihadmin said, could cause corrupt maps.
D) Map should be no larger than 25 MB (And that is very large. For a map.) Because of bandwidth issues.
Anyways, first things first. We take it slow and steady and progressively move forward. Bad analogy: You wouldn't go from Algebra straight to AP Calculus, would you?
I know full and well I don't own this server. These are just some suggestions. WiH is a great place as is, and does not need much changing. I.e. keeping out retarded quake sounds like "GODLIKE!" and other useless crap.
These are my ideas. If you disagree, then just tell me what you think should happen.
Also, I would like to thank the owners for even considering 1 custom map into the rotation. I feel honored that you decided to do it on my post (And I think tht's because they're just tired of people asking) and believe you me, if one of these maps takes people away, I will be your personal CS:S bitch.

All the maps we've posted only use 2 files. The BSP and the NAV files. So that issue is out of the way.
As for which custom map makes it in, I really don't care anymore :p
I'm off to look at other custom maps now.

Looking at the poll right now - we may just have to try both of them out, but maybe at a seperate time.
i.e. - Temple beats Clan_mill and Contra. 50% to 48% 2% (Lost, Mill, Contra) then perhaps we would try Temple out for a certain time -- then it be voted on, then try a diff map.
I now am beginning to see why this custom map thing is a hastle (but I still want to see one on, I like all the maps I threw up, and I would definately like to see Temple, and Mill, and even Contra for that matter.)
I guess my point is, don't cry if your selection wasn't picked. Just GIVE THE MAP A SHOT! If you don't like it after trying it, vote it out. Like my mom always says (about food) "Try it, if you don't like it spit it out."
The whole map selecting process is supposed to be a democratic election -- and if one map wins by 1%, so be it. It can't hurt to try the map out for a (minimum) of 1 week, right? Once the week is up, come to the forums. And simply "Hey, I hate this map, let's remove it" and to KEEP the map it would have to be a minimum of 60%.
I probably make no sense.

Screens and download.
Players can download from here and just put in their map directory so they don't have to download from the server.
The "mirror" site is a .rar, you will need winrar. I suggest everyone get winrar over windows default zip program anyways.
Happy fragging guys, and once our trial run is up, don't forget to vote if you like it! Official Score from inhalflife: 4.5/5.
Edit: Be careful as well, as the makers even said there are a LOT of custom textures. So, just be weary.

You only tried one.
You guys were too facking impatient (namely Kanos, thanks bud), so I got screwed in this little poll where 2 of the maps are shit. Lost Temple blows them both away in terms of visuals and design. I was trying to make it a little more even.
Thankfully, Temple got picked, and I'm happy about that... but seeing as I spent so much time in the past and recently trying to conjure up some worthy custom maps and I got facked over, it kinda ticks me off.
Anyways, I'm gonna make a post on custom maps again for people who like to try new maps. Maybe we can find servers running them or even set the maps up on a server.

I guess what differs from my viewpoint is that, I wasn't trying to make a huge change. Simply add a map, and change it up. Not have a new server (If that's what you are getting at) with just customs on it. I won't give names to diff servers, but I have been paying excssive attention to maps being ran on servers, and which are good and bad.
I guess customs are sort of like.. valve maps. Some people like Havana, some people hate it.

I love customs and I loved the custom server. I cant wait to finally get some customs in here. I would like to keep changing it up a little. Lets not just pick one and then have that be our custom map. I would like to see a new one every week or 2.
