Sneaky Hard Drive Elves

Every once in a while I catch "windows Defrag" getting a bit over zelous...

After my trip to Connecticut I decided hey I need a good hard drive defrag...when it was done 2 hours later I thought hmm now I'll play some BF2..

Click on the short cut and *BAM* "your shortcut dosen't point to a program"

:wallbash: damn damn damn...so I look in C:\Games and it is right...everything in the BF2 folder went poof...

O'well guess I'll reinstall it again tonight... :thumbsup:

Yikes!! I've never seen that happen, but since Defrag basically moves files from one part of the drive to another, it's definitely posible!

This is the fifth time I've had it happen...I just wish the files would be kind enough to leave a forwarding address...

um... wow that's interesting...

defrag rearanges the files on the physical surace of the hard drive so the drive doesn't need to seek all around the physical surface of the disk to find things, improving your seek time by only a few miliseconds with modern drives. personally I feel it's only nessicary to defrag your boot drive, especially if it's a larger sized drive (IMO over 100 gigs) so that your system files are conveiently in order for a fast boot.

All file paths, extentions, direcories and shortcuts should all remain untouched O.o you got me on why things would just up and dissapear.
