Ok, I haven't been around lately b/c I can't get windows to install. I was getting non page file error in a nonpaged area, so I said fug it and got two 100gig SATA drives from bestbuy, and put them in a raid setup. TODAY, while trying to install windows I came across yet ANOTHER error! Even though I had in a floppy with the Raid drivers on it, windows couldn't copy them :dunno: That lead to another BSOD with the area about some CDSF blah blah blah. I deleted all the partitions I made, I am reformatting the drives currently, and when that is done I will be crossing my fingers that Xp will install. This is so angering!!!! I may have to update the BIOS next if I can't get it to work, well that or change from the onboard VIA Raid controller to the onboard Promise controller and see what happens.

Forget what I just said. After I got to installing the network adapters, I uninstalled the 1394 ones when they came up, and then when it continued I got an IRQL equal but not less error :( Back to the beginning :(

Another update, because I can. I set all settings in bios to default, and then made some minor changes there. Quick format of the partition, and now windows is installing, lets hope I get past the network settings page :(

Can I move this thread over to the Tech forum? There's nothing really confidential in this thread that should be kept to admins only.

Well I just upped to a more current bios, I get through formatting, but then I get a BSOD with a CDSF error. I have been googling it, and it seems that this can be caused by bad memory. I am going to yank it out an dgo with one stick first. Try it and see what happens, if still a prob, then I go back to two 512's or back to the last known bios I could install on.

Ok, left the bios alone at the latest version. Still had probs, but after doing some research I found out that the memory could be causing these problems. SO, I took out my BRAND new 2x 1gig sticks and replaced with my old 2x512 sticks and VIOLA it installed fine.
SO, there is something either wrong with the memory or with installing the OS with that much memory. I don't know how I would test that though.

first and third never worked with the 2x 512's, but I guess it can't hurt. I will do it AFTER I have windows totally installed and updated.

I never saw problems like this....I also am the only person I know who ran Win95 without a single blue screen for 3 years...(you can pat me on the back now)
First off...use the Promise RAID controller...VIA sucks....next...stop trying to be slick with your uninstalls...the 1394 network adapter isn't going to bother anything so don't frig with it...and don't give me any crap about it takes up space...on a 200gig RAID 0, 129 bytes of DLL isn't anything.
Next don't try to get slick at all...take all those "my friend told me once" registary tricks and give them a toss...try this...
Build a computer with middle of the road equipment...(cheap bastards)
Use parts from companies you have heard of...
Install pain vanilla windows
If you wernt a complete cheap ass your network card will be found by XP
Next install all your games
Finally enjoy your games...really the only thing you should have to mess with is the video card driver and those install without much effort...
Now I personally think you should play with your BETA crap on another computer..verify it is stable then game with it full time. This way your not goofing with installs all the time...
Network Card drivers are a joke..they are just packet drivers that were built 10 years ago anyway...they are just tweaked becasue there is always someone who thinks they are smarter...
If you just apply the UNIX method of "if it isn't broken, don't mess with it" approch you will find things work just the way you want them too...
I build all of my COLO servers myself and the smallest uptime I have is 167 days....the longest as of today is 489 days...

Drayu works as a Best Buy Secret Shopper Super Tester Geek Squad member so he's gotta use the latest and most unstable drivers.

yea I know...but he dosen't have to use them on his game machine...he can setup some middle of the road case and fill it full of test crap...that way he can always play games...no matter what the "driver of the day" does to the system...

Were you trashing me? :D Even after BEERS!!! Ouch!
Ok, I hear you with the not messing with anythign, and I didn't. I am still on the VIA controller because all the forums say it is the way to go. I have windows installed too. I just shut down the computer though after it installed because it was too hot to sit in the sunroom in the afternoon. SO, tonight I will finish installing the drivers for the sound, video, network, processor, and via 4in1's.
I still don't get why it wouldn't work with the 1 gig sticks in it. Just bothers me because I want to use those sticks. Once it is installed, I will put those sticks back in and see what happens.

So with the two 512 sticks in everything installed just fine. I got BF installed, then I swapped out the two 512's for the two gig sticks(slots 1 and 3 per Bonez's advice), and while I was editing the audio setup, the game froze. SO, i am not sure if it is the game or the system yet. We are currently in a house shaking thunderstorm, so i will be doing nothign till its over. But I may run a memory test to see if a stick is bad when the storm passes.
Grrr.....I have a night without the woman, and I can't play :(

Maybe the two memory sticks are overheating?
Paul30
08-12-2005, 11:59 PM
hmm Malak has a good point...they might not be bad just hot...if your case allows it try adding a fan to blow across the ram...
Also I wasen't trashing you  just rough advice :D
Drayu
08-13-2005, 07:42 AM
yeah, I don't have a place to put a fan to blow straight across it, but I will put a box fan facing the side of the case and see what happens. I don't have the sticks oc'ed, so not sure why they would be getting hot, but eh...worth a try.
