IL-2 1946 4.11 Patch released

How many games get new content almost 10 years after their release?

What is in the new patch?

5 new flyable planes including a 4 engine Soviet heavy bomber (Tupolev TB-7 M40), IL-4 twin engine bomber, FW-190 A4 (thought that was in there already but they've tweaked it or something), and the Mossie 'Tsetse' that slings a 57mm cannon. :thumbsup:

6DoF now works in cockpit view. I dont think freetrack will work right off the bat but I can tweak that.

AI improvements.. It can no longer see through clouds. It now has to deal with overheats. It shouldnt crash into terrain as often. It will no longer try to shoot through friendly aircraft. It will no longer be able to shoot while under heavy G's (AI now has to worry about blackouts??). A few others but those are the big ones.

They've improved the radiator modeling. So alt, temp, and airspeed now come into play. Random damage if you're overheating the engine for too long. Lots of fairly complex changes there.

Bomb fuse changes

Bomb damage changes. Near misses will now damage enemy ships more. Torpedoes are more effective as well.

Lots of nice changes here. That Russian heavy bomber looks like it will be fun. It still isnt a B17 but this thing has 2x20mm guns in the rear. It should be pretty effective at swatting bad guys from the skies.

I'll be around this week, but Saturday might be a good day for a fly in. I'm going to have to learn how to use the bomb sights in that 4 engine bomber. Although I REALLY want to try out the rear guns on it. .50 cal guns never seem to have enough punch to bring down fighters for me. 20mm cannons? :minigun: Yeah baby!

Still wish those guys would give us a B17 or even a flyable Avenger.

Also I agree with Cliffs of Dover, it still isnt right yet. It needs 64bit if only for the extra RAM.

Anyone who's thinking of showing up, check and make sure Tungle is still working for you. It just makes connecting to everyone much faster then reading out an IP address a dozen times. :thumbsup:

I was farting around in the new heavy bomber earlier. :thumbsup: Those rear guns do indeed just trash incoming fighters. A short half second burst disabled a 109's engine. :woot: I think you guys will really like that plane.

Also I'm happy to say I had 2 perfect carrier landings in a row. I dont think I've ever managed that before.

cant wait to get back into the cockpit of all of these aircraft. i miss the old russian bomber that carries fighter aircraft under its wings. was having a fun time with that last time i played.

it turns out i had deleted it. re dl'ing the game now from steam. will i need more than the 4.11 patch?

The 4.11 patch is all you'll need. There are a lot of cool mods for IL-2 but I havent installed any of them so you shouldnt need them. You will want tungle going and I guess there is a patch for that.

If you're reinstalling you might want to set your joystick sensitivity again. I'm not 100% how do it though and I may not be on tonight to help you. I'll try to get on later tonight, but it might be late.

Also if you're installing you'll probably need to reset a few controls since there is no default ones set. Lock tail wheel, arresting hook deploy, and wheel chocks are the 3 that come to mind. Might want one to fold/unfold the wings as well but set that one to a 2 key combo to prevent an accident (alt-f or ctrl-f)

A quick take off procedure..

Press 'I' to start engine. Lock tail wheel. Set flaps to take off or landing if you're on a carrier.

Also if you're having trouble seeing around, press Ctrl-F1 to remove the cockpit. (I think that's it)

Yeah there is a trick to it. I think I had to go into a config.ini file and change it manually. I dont recall the exact procedure to it, but I'll post it in here when I figure it out again.


I do have another observation on the new patch. It's about the Mossie with the 57mm cannon. You can really only shoot it while flying straight. It WILL jam if you try to turn while firing it. Has something to do with g-forces screwing up the autoloader. You can pull back on the stick ok, but if you roll the airplane, it locks up.

**Err. I forgot about Drayu's x52 profile. If you use that it should have all the keys ready for you and you can disregard my previous post about wheel chocks and etc...

Go to the /Steam/steamapps/common/il 2 sturmovik 1946/ folder. Open the conf.ini file with notepad and change the below section so it is the same as mine, except change the res to native res of your monitor, my setting is for 22" widescreen LCD. Save and run the game.

ok, i have il2 1946 via steam. i dl'd the game and installed. then i installed the 4.11 patch, pointing it to
Steam/steamapps/common/il 2 sturmovik 1946

it is crashing at startup now.

any suggestions.

No error message. I run the set up from the CD and nothing happens. I look at the processes in task manager and see the program in there but it gets to a certain point and just hangs there doing nothing and no longer accessing the CD. I checked and it is running in compatibility mode and I even tried execution as admin but same thing each time.

Eh, I have the disk and it is not working. I suck as a pilot anyway so it's not worth dropping more $$$ on it. Have fun and thanks for trying to help Drayu.

I will say, if your not a pilot type, this setup process can't be worth it. Really is a ton o fun for pilot types.

While reading a bit about bugs in IL-2 4.11 and I came across an interesting thread that details a plane that's on the way. I guess they've been doing work on a B24D and it looks great!

That thread also mentions that IL-2 will not be 'finished' until it has a B17. :woot: Although it's probably a year away. :( That's ok though, a B24 would be VERY cool
