Started this thread to figure out the time/place to meet up with Lord Beer and sir_diggalot for some RC playing around.
When? Sunday 9/4/11 11:30am
Where? RC plane flying is going to be at. meet in the back parking lot behind school. I'm still trying to find a dirt lot or softball field in the area where we can run our RC cars.
John F Kennedy Middle School
12350 Essington Road
Plainfield, IL 60585-9528
http://g.co/maps/9prt
Weather seems iffy with chances of storm, but it's still early in the week for accurate forecasts. So we'll play it by ear.
Toys I'm bringing:
Traxxas Stampede
Electrix Ruckus
T-45 50mm EDF jet
SuperCub trainer
LB can drive the Stampede if he wants, I'll drive my son's Ruckus bc I need to checkout its new motor and ESC. You guys can try your hands at the Super Cub too if you want. It's a 2-channel trainer plane, rated at experience level 1 for complete newbies. It's slow and ultra-stable due to it's high level of dihedral in the wings.
If you guys have suggestions on time/place, please throw it out. Anyone else in the area is welcome to join us. Bring RC toys!

Very cool! I didn't know you have a Stampede too. Are you running the Titan 12T motor in it? What gearing are you using? I'm putting the XL-5 ESC and Titan 12T motor into my son's Ruckus.

i am stick with the 12T right now i was thinking about upgrading to the 19t that they supply but not sure, the brushless is a $130 upgrade no matter if i get it from traxxas or ebay ( the motor is like 30 the esc is 130 *LOL*)
unfortuantly the xl-5 is only 2x4 not that i care too much, and i have standard AM for now but it seems to work ok, i can alsways throw my 6ch 2.4 in if i need too, it does take some getting used to compared to the nitro and is still pretty fast, (i have to learn NOT to run after it when i drive into something because it has reverse *L*)

i have a question though, they say the stampede is waterproof, and the rx box esc and servos are, but the motor hangs out the back, and does not look very water proof at all it even has bare connectors so i am a little nervouse about running it wet.
i also gave up on waterproofing the buggy, at least the servos, they are alreayd water resistant, and i am going to wrap the rx box, though at $7 a new RX is not really that expensive *L*

Did you recently get the Stampede? I'll let you drive my Stampede 4x4 with the Velineon brushless system. It's pretty fast for a stocker!
My son's Ruckus is 2x4 as well and it's fine in grass/dirt.

That motor is a brushed motor so being waterproof is irrelevant. For example, to break in a brushed motor, you dunk it in a glass of water and run it for several minutes. There are videos on YT for that. So as long as you don't go submerging yourself in mud, you'll be ok. My son drove his ruckus into the puddles of clay/dirt water from the softball field and his motor is ok.
On the Rx, if those are the ones from FlySky, there is a video of someone completely submerging the Rx pcb in water to show that they work just fine. I will probably Plasti-dip my son's Rx though. Mine, I have it inside the box and that's all I did.

yeah i bought the stampede last week because i wanted an electric, nitro is fine but alot of work, and i spend most of my time fixing/replacing parts ( usually because i drive digital (100% accel on or all off *L*) but thats also one of the reasons i bought it, i like the tinkering,
i tend to order 2 of everything though since they are usually cheap enough ( the chassis plate is getting warped and they di not do metal diff housings though which is a shame as the front end is getting a beating *L*)
i was basing my experience with a motor on well motors, *L* they have comutators and brushes and conductive parts...
that said, unless we are driving in salt water i doubt it makes much difference, i never really notice too much differnce between 2 or 4 wheel drive, the buggy was just fine 2 wheel, usually when it got stuck all 4 wheels bogged down, though again it only has buggy tyres not monster truck tires, though that has given me an idea *LOL*

I didn't notice much between the 2x4 of my son's and 4x4 of my Stampede. It only comes into play when you're on slick surfaces like snow or mud. Which reminds me, I'm going to get a spare set of wheels/tires and then make studded snow tires for winter bashing fun!
Looking fwd to meeting you and playing around with RC cars/jets Sunday!

The time and place look good to me Crotch. All my parts came in and I'm hoping to begin soldering tomorrow.

and I found my little hex wrenches so I'll be able to adjust the diff on my car. :woot: Hopefully this will keep it from melting early into the day.

Yeah. That's important. I set my slipper clutch so I can wheelie the Stampede. But my slip different is set so that when the truck goes on the two side wheels, it slips and drops the truck back down.
Going to work on my son's truck tomorrow nite. But sounds like you'll have your own car to drive, LB. So i might leave the Ruckus home and only take my Stampede and planes.

I bought a wheelie bar for the stampede, I have noted justhow complex they have made the transmission in the stampede it seems like it would be bound to malfunction at somepoint... The buggy is so basic in comparison though I do end up stripping gears on that

I'm thinking about leaving the T45 jet home and taking the A10 Warthog. I have to build it though so that is dependent upon time availability over the next several days.

Sounds like it'll rain on Sat. If no rain sunday, I'll be there. If I won't make it out due to rain, I'll post here by 10:30am Sun.
Also, a couple of rc pilots might be there as well. One of them might be doing FPV flying. Btw, I drive a black Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck. If you don't see it, I'm not there yet.
Please post here if you're not going to make it at last minute. Thanks! See you guys Sunday! I'll PM you guys (sir_dig, LB) my phone #

You read my mind with the phone number thing crotch. Hopefully I will not have to call you asking you to bring your other truck Crotch.
I'll be driving a bright red Saturn SUV. It's pretty hard to miss. See you Sunday.

Well the buggy lives! I think.. Steering servo seems perfect. The throttle was reversed at first but it seems to be ok now.
I was having one little snag which I think might be because of a very old battery pack. The car turns full right and becomes unresponsive. I think it's because of a 20yr old battery whose charge is dying. I havent gotten one of the new packs in there yet. If you guys have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Off to Fly's Electronics to buy solder & a new iron. :)

if it is an old nicd battery you are better off getting a newer nimh pack from a hobby store ( or build one yourself) i have a couple of 9.6 v nimh packs in my nerf gun if you need one and or if it is compatible, they are a little wide! ( and an extra stampede 8.4 v 7cell)

I have 3 packs of 7.2v with Tamiya connectors for my son's Ruckus that you can borrow tomorrow.
What controller are you using LB? Did you get that FlySky GT3B?

It was the super old battery causing trouble. It seems to be working great with the brand new one. :woot:
Thank you for the offer Dig and Crotch. I had bought two new batteries when I got the radio. I just hadnt wired them up with the new connectors. After only burning myself 2x, I got them all soldered in.
I do hope you can make it Justme.
**I did get the radio you recommended Crotch. I think I have it all figured out and should be good to go.

So you're cool with your car right LB? I'm going to leave my son's truck home then. I might get out there a little early to drive around to scope out for empty gravel lots.
Speaking of that radio GT3B, don't use the expo. There's a bug in the software. I'll tell you tomorrow. Easier said than type.

Well that was very cool today guys. I'm glad we all got together. Damn shame it was a little windy for the planes but my buggy went the distance.. for the most part. :woot:
I look forward to the pics and it was great meeting you guys.

That was a lot of fun guys! Bummer it was so windy. My truck is still in the garbage bag. Thanks for that sir_digalot! Surprisingly, no jet nor plane crash. Only a broken drive shaft on my truck from doing a couple of power wheelies on tarmac.
Definitely going to have to do that again!

Sorry I missed it. I was in the area but did not allow for Chicago traffic or me takin a few wrong turns. The one wrong oops 80 cents and your going 20 miles north. lol next time I go near Chicago I need a Garmin.
sir_digalot
09-05-2011, 10:34 AM
definitly need gps in chicago despite what the residents say, and most perferably one that can route around freeway and tollway traffic! that said the traffic was suprisingly good yesterday, for a change

I thought I figured out what happened to my motor. I found a capacitor had detached itself on the motor but soldering it back on did not do the trick. :( I'm not at home so I can't try the multimeter yet. Although I have been looking at new motors for it. I figure I can dump another $20 into the car if it needs it.
sir_digalot
09-05-2011, 07:39 PM
all in all your car was great, on the tarmac it was wicked fast, if you got a new motor for it it should last a while longer, even if it is just for bashing. it remided me of the grasshopper my brother in law had.

09-05-2011, 07:43 PM
We were keeping an eye out for you JustMe. Maybe next time...
I want to see your nitro car run again, sir_digalot. that sucker is FAST!!!
Lordbeer, your buggy is fast on the tarmac man! Hope you figure out what's wrong and fix it. Maybe your friend will also bring his truck out next time. If scheduling works out, I'll bring my son so he can run his truck too. That'll be 5 trucks and buggies zooming around.
My pics and video is posted at

Feel free to add yours to that thread.
Thanks for coming out to play guys! It's great to meet you guys and hang out for a while!!!
