I read about this and figured I'd share. I guess the Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) guys have teamed up with Sonalysts to release a free simulation. Sonalysts are the guys who made Dangerous Waters and a few other VERY realistic modern naval warfare games. I guess they also did real work on uS sonar systems.

Anyway.. DARPA is working on some unmanned naval craft to hunt submarines. In the game you pilot one of these craft and track subs. when you finish the round, it asks you if you'd like to have your mission track sent to DARPA for analysis. They are going to use the research gained to help program the AI in the craft to hunt submarines more effectively in the real world.

You wont be shooting anything in this, you are just there to track and help with research. I think this is a pretty cool way to go about it. I've already tried it out a few times and it's pretty neat. It gives you a score at the end (Not sure how scoring works yet) and you can track your stats on a leaderboard.

It's pretty neat and it's free. I'd recommend trying it out if you have the time. The missions can be finished up in around 15mins with time acceleration on.

Here is a link talking about the program

And here is the offical DARPA link with info and a place to download it.

But what if I don't want them to learn where I hide my submarines?

Well you dont have to send the mission tracking info if you should choose. So you can keep your South American drug subs hidden a little longer.

OMG! How did you know... ABORT ABORT ABORT THE MISSION IS COMPROMISED!

But really, how common are subs and isn't there satellite tech that would be more efficient?

I can tell you about how I know about your sub but then I'd have to kill you. Since I have no way of killing you, I cant tell you. :yaya:

If the sub is doing it right, then it's submerged. Sound is still the best way to track a submarine when it's submerged. Then you have to factor in cost. You can probably run this drone for a year at the same cost of just launching a satellite. Finally you have the time on station. Changing the course of a satellite is getting tricky with all the junk up there. This drone could get right where you want it and stay there for weeks with no problem at all.
