View Full Version : Gaming Rig (Mark II)

So it's getting to be the spring time, and I find myself flush with a little cash leftover. I'm thinking of building a new gaming rig for myself, and wanted to get some WiHers thoughts on components to look at.
I have peripherals all set, so really just whats in the tower (and the tower itself!). I know it will be Win7 64bit Ultra, at least 8g RAM, but other than that, up in the air. I do run 2x 27" monitors, so was thinking of sinking the most $$ into an uber graphics card. i7 processor?

I'd grab one of those h50 coolers before the sale ends. Whatever CPU you wind up with, you'll be happy with that cooler.

Two double cards for only 2 monitors? You thinking I could SLI them? Or Would I do better to spend the $500 on one card

Most of the hardware sites I follow really like running a pair of 6850's for their performance and efficiency. The first run of 6990's are nice but loud and $700 for around the same performance. The GTX 590 might be suitable and pretty close in performance, but largely untried at this point. I'm not confident enough to recommend it yet. A pair of GTX 570's may also be suitable. The AMD Radeon HD 6000's have been scaling remarkably well compared to Nvidia's card. Plus designed a little better for multiple display setups.

Two video cards hell yeah.
You already have a Q9950 cpu. (My same cpu is OCed from 2.83 to 3.4 GHz)
Far as I can see you only need on your current ridge a video card update to maybe a Nvidia 580 GTX or a 590 GTX
If you are going to go get a single GPU and money is not an issue I would say get the 580, If money is really not an issue either the 6990 (over the 590) or 2 580's If you dont want to spend 500+ then either the 570 or even 2 of the slightly older 460's in sli.

Well, this build must happen now sadly. Apparently issues with drivers for vid card is the cause of the blue screens I've been getting the past few weeks.
Tried installing my new 570, worked for 2 days. Blue screened again last night. Went thru uninstalling driver and reinstalling an archived driver off their site. Well, the new driver won't install, and the old one I had won't install either, so I'm sunk at the moment.
So, please, any and all thoughts on parts. Going to play around this afternoon with what Shadow and JMBF2 posted and hopefully order tonight. Since I have a brand spanking new GTX570, I will be skipping the dual cards and using it. What I'm really looking for is a good mobo with plenty of plugs for fans!
Help me War-is-Hell-Kenobis, you're my only hope!

I'll give that a shot when I get home. Hopefully that will clear out the olds, but since the new ones (or old version newly download ones) won't boot (7-zip errors) I'm scared shitless. Might end up just pillaging my old box for parts for a new box.

I would run a HDD checker to see if you have errors there too.

So playing around I came up with this (https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=15846985)
Was thinking a full tower for the airflow. Not sure if the mobo has enough plugs for all the fans though.
I have the 570 as a graphics card all ready, so please rip it to shreds or give it a nod!

Gotta make the wish list public, log out and find a link to it. Then post it. Otherwise we'll need your log in info, and I don't think you wanna do that. :p
Otherwise isn't anything wrong with the GTX 570. I feel, and it seems a lot of people here feel, its a pretty good toss up between a Radeon 6950 and a GTX 570. My biggest beef with Nvidia is they tend to be a little more power hungry, and often run a little warmer. Being a broke ass, I prefer efficiency.

Have that case and love it! It is HUGE for a mid tower! plenty of room, easy to work in, and great if you have water cooling.
As for a cooler.....I really recommend the Corsair H50 if you want an enclosed water cooling system.

I was thinking the h70 since I'd have extra space? I have the H50 now and loving it!

Isn't the difference minimal? An extra fan and slightly larger radiator? Just slap a second fan on for that push pull. ( we did that on rabbid hamsters machine)

Do you know if the mobo has enough plugs for all the fans? Ever since you recommended the H50 and I got it, have had zero complaints. My current tower I had to unplug 2 fans to get the H50 running though, leaving only 1 to cool the rest of the interior, and I've never been that comfortable with the potential lack of airflow. Noise isn't an issue to me frankly, so I can stand the jet engine sound.
I'm also concerned with the tower arrangement. with the power supply on the bottom and it's heat rising, the graphics cards fan will be blowing down at it.
So if I switched to the H50, you'd give those parts a "Drayu seal of approval"? haha

for the H50, the pump should go into a cpu fan slot, and then the radiator fan into one of the case fan slots. Not sure what mobo you have, but only to have two case fan headers seems cheap, sorry :(
Also, when using the H50 or H70, there is a small reference to this in a few places (at least when I installed mine) that you MUST have the pump running at full blast. You must go into your settings and be sure to set the header for the pump to full RPMs.
I will see if I can find it.

Your CPU and motherboard are not compatible. You'll need a x58 or socket 1366 motherboard for that CPU. Or one of the new Core i7-2600K's, to use with the motherboard on your list. I'd actually recommend switching the CPU to one of the newer ones.

And Drayu, yes, the CPU fan has to be on overdrive. I just set the BIOS controls to turbo.

Kept it around $1400 using the i5 recommended in earlier post and H50 over H70. Which if you count the $315 or so I spent on the GTX 570, I'm still under my $2k goal.
