An active aircraft carrier is a machine of great efficiency.

That 'long exposure' is about a 2 second window of time. Those catapults take those planes from 0 to 160-180 (depends on the plane) in around 200 feet. Pretty amazing pieces of machinery.

I got to stay two weeks on the Kitty Hawk (CV-63) when I was in the Sea Cadet corps, about 12 years ago. Was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. We stayed in berths under the two main catapults right up front, 3 or 4 decks down. LOUD!

Excellent pic!

I'll be on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) aircraft carrier on monday :)

Though.. it'll be in port.. and I have to read two separate 300 page medical department procedure manuals before I go :(

I was going to say, you dont mill around an active flight deck much.

yes he lived it was an awesome example of jet suck ever used, we were warned about that at college and at british airways, the engine was at full power, it wasa turbojet too meaning very little bypass ( unlike say a a-10 or a boeing 747 engine... 747 engines are freaking awesome triple the power of a a-6 engine

he was sucked in but never made it by the compressor

here is the interview of him and the whole sequence
