View Full Version : Claymors, are they useless?

Tonight I attempt to play sniper and cover my own arse with claymors, all I ended up doing was TKing everyone on my team.

I'm sorry to those I TK, but where do I put them? Maybe they are useless.

I put one at the top of the stairs, a guy came up ran over them and was TKed.

I put one at the bottom of the stairs, TK another guy, someone in Teamspeak who seemed quite upset, sorry I TK you, I was attempting not to TK by putting them at the bottom of the stairs. Figured it would be more Visible there. I dont think I own the building, I'm just trying to use the Tools EA gave me to cover my backside.

Oh and to that guy in TS, I'm know you dont want to stop and explain, but maybe you can think that a TK was on accident just for once, it wasn't like I charged you and shot you, or ran over you in a Jeep. I set down a claymor and walked away, it was completely on accident, I would not have put it there if I knew it was a bad place, I thought it was better then top of the stairs.

If people dont forgive in this situation, do they ever really forgive? How much more on accident could it of been to make it a forgive-able situation?

Then I put one on the roof away from the ladder, so I could barely even move myself, TK another guy.

Then I put one in the middle of the street, about 10 feet from the ladder, TK another guy. I was not near any flags when any of this occured, i figured putting them by a flag would just be asking for it.

Anyways it seems like people completely ignore the little Death thing that comes up, and dont look around. So I've come to the conclusion they are pretty much useless for covering your own arse as a sniper, because your own team no matter how far in the corner of the map you go, are more likely to run over them?

It was very frustrating, so any advice? Or are claymors just asking to TK people.

well #1 stay as FAR AWAY from your team as possible.

and #2 if you want to use them, make sure they will be going off shortly after you set them.

i use them more as an offensive weapon then a defensive one(as anyone that has seen me chuck one or two at them)

they have saved me several times. most of the time i have killed some one from the other team, but there are the other times were some block head will run right up to the big red death mark and then punish. hehe alot of the time i set one at the top of the ladder, the guy come up to kill me ...boom. then i set another, when he comes back (they allways seem to come back) boom again. Then i go and try and find a new spot..

They are like mines... hard to use well on a public game... in matches howerever, they are EXTREMELY important

Here's how I use'em, though you'll need a strong degree of situational awareness...

I'll go into enemy territory to snipe, lets say in a building or around an alleyway corner and pop enemies left 'n right. Eventually, I get spotted. I'll take care of who sees me, then retreat.

Knowing that A.) They'll come at me solo, or B.) They'll get a few team mates after me, I move to a position that'll give me a firing advantage over the location where I just was, while covering any possible entry points to that location.

It's during that time I'll lay claymores at spots that are common places to check for a runaway sniper. Like around a corner, or in the doorway of an adjacent building.

There's a player on the BF2 server named, oh heck I forgot his name. Anyways, he's always on the prowl looking for snipers and I always bean'em with my claymores with the above strategy. Since he's looking for snipers, he'll check common fall back points.

A lot of times I'm out in the open sniping, but not far from adequate cover, the enemy simply doesn't see me x.x;

I have the same problem with mines. Just remember most ppl are stupid and blame you for it (not thier falling short in the genetics gene pool). The same thing will happen when you play commander and you put the BIG RED MAGNET (artillary) down on the map so your team can charge it and die. :wallbash: Unfortunitly this is an aspect of the game that must be accepted. GOOD LUCK to you.

I just use 'em where's I needs 'em.

Just today I got clobbered by a well placed Claymore.

If you can't figure out what to do when the HUGE RED SKULL appears, oh well. It's unlikely you'll get enough TKs to get kicked if you're placing them intelligently.

I only use Claymores when I know someone is chasing after me. I plant them in the least obvious position I can, to nail him when he tries to kill me. But even then, teammates can't seem to spot them too easily.

When I go up to a prime sniping spot on a building, I'll usually lay one down at the edge of the rooftop by the ladder. My hope is that a friendly will see the red skull as it's so close to the edge, but an enemy will miss it.

I'm happy to report that to this date I've gotten enemy kills with it, but zero Tk's.

I tried the, "Cover my backside" approach and ended up with -12 points on multiple occasions. Unless you are knee deep in enemy territory and are going to be there for a good 10 minutes its pretty useless to place them to cover your back.

You just have to do it correctly. It's all about placement. You have to put it far enough on the edge of the building so a friendly climbing the ladder can see the skull. If you put it to far back, they won't see it until they're at the top of the ladder and face to face with it.

i killed tons of people last night with claymores.

Strike at Karkland

put them around the corner of buildings and on the edges of ramps, killed two squads.

Fushe Pass

around corners at rear flags, also used them in a path most traveled area to get people that were trying to kill me, about 6 kills with a claymore

there was probally more, but i don't remember.

I only use things like mines and claymores when I am certain it will be come across by an enemy first. Like if I can draw them into a trap. You cant really use them as a prevention measure. Like if I duck behind a corner becouse I see 3 or 4 enemys give chase from across the street, I will throw one down fast. That or be willing to risk a TK, witch I normaly dont do.

I did this too, and when the other person noticed it they said I dont own the building and am blocking access from them. So even if I dont TK here, I still seem to make teammates angry.

Really I just hope they remove Friendly TKs for Mines/Claymors especially, and take away the ability to punish TKs for Artillary strikes, thats the only way I can see using them in a public server that wont make someone angry.

No one owns any of the buildings in this game. Just like the whorehawks, it's first come first server. Any teammate who gets angry because you've secured your sniping area needs to get a life or go play somewhere else.

I think you got me the other day... I realized the beauty of it while laying at the bottom of the ladder waiting to respawn. Next time I use grenades, might not get you..... but at least I avoid the deathglide.

they are FAR from useless....you jsut got to know when and how to use them...

dropping them in an area that is a hot zone, makes it easy to nail a teamate. if you want to get the enemy, you have to catch them by suprise in an area they are usually found at, not a well populated area full of both sides of each team. too risky that way.

No matter how hard you try to place a claymore/mine/what-have-you, you will get a TK. The people who don't pay attention to the big red danger sign or don't think will always believe your at fault no matter what. Just place the stuff where you think is best and hope it goes well. If not, just respawn and go enjoy the game again.

The best advice I could give for using the claymore is simple. Use common sense when placing and don't worry about the TK. If you feel like the chances that a teammate will walk up that ladder are high, don't put one there or do if you think it's low. Either way, some wanna be soldier-should be broom pusher will eventually find it, eat it, and punish you for it. And as common as those guys are, I really do feel sorry for those who command these battles.

Don't let any of it worry you. Keep sniping and playing the game in a way that you enjoy the most. Sooner or later, the guys who live to get TK'd will get fed up and leave.
