View Full Version : Anyone have a fix?

I don't know if I'm the only one here with ridiculous verifying times (Load the map in less than a minute, wait exactly 3 minutes every time a map loads to verify) but has anyone heard of a true fix for this yet? Doing a search shows that I'm not the only one with this problem, even people with better specs than my computer are having this.
I've looked around and the stuff people are saying is generally useless, such as: "time to upgrade." I was always one the first to load bf42 and cs, now I'm last for BF2. I don't think it's the hardware
So if anyone has any suggestions, please say something.

did you clear the cache? that seemed to help a bit, here is what I did:
I tried a fix somebody suggested from the IGN forums. Apparently, BF2 has a problem when you change your control and/or video settings. It randomly uses a mixture of the old and new settings from the cache. To fix this, you have to delete your cache files. They're located in My Documents>BF2>Mods>Cache (something like that). Inside the Cache folder are 1 or more folders containing many files (they're all called textureshader######## or something).
1. Change all your settings the way you want them.
2. Exit the game
3. Delete the files/folders inside the Cache folder
4. Reload the game. It will "optimize your shaders" next time you join a match, but your framerate should be a lot better.
If you're worried about deleting files, just put them in the recycle bin so you can restore them if you want. But BF2 is going to refill the cache correctly as soon as you restart the game anyway, until you change your settings again, that is.
I did this and my load time now takes about 60 seconds at most

I have the same problem.
I was going to request that the maps play at least 2 times to cut down on the time I spend waiting to verify. but I was told that is why people like this server, play a map once and move on to the next map.

Lag should only affect you during sync states...for example the very begining of a round will be choppy untill you sync with the server.
Remeber that most of the work is being done on your machine...the sever is (basically) just tracking your movements through a very structured database. all the pretty pictures are generated locally so after the sync phase if your still getting occasional rubber banding or loss of frames then you might want to consider easy things like push more air accross your video card...or makeing sure your using the "best" driver...thiese things should help you level out your frame rates..."ALOT" of people over look the importance of having a cool video card...now as I said this will only level out your framerates...don't expect 70fps out of a card that has only ever given you 45...
Now if your framerates jump around constantly from say 55fps to 3fps then you might want to consider you connection settings as you are most likely losing sync...for dsl users take the time to go to http://www.dslreports.com they have some speed tools you can use to check your up/down rates as well as tools to optimize your local settings...most will find there MTU is out of range...
If (lord help you) your on a modem make sure you using the latest driver and also try to find a phone number within your phone prefix..example if your number is 454-xxxx then try to make sure your connect number is 454-xxxx this will ensure your phone call is traveling to the local CO only before it transfers to the providers network..
Satalite users....good for you...I can't help you...

This is my Sig ---> I attribute it to lag. My framerate drops to the single digit slideshow constantly. If I lower my settings much more I'm gunna be playing with stick figures. it's meant to explain my crappy play... a joke... ha ha?
the real problem is that the verifying takes for ever. i'm sitting there waiting to get in the game while everyone is fragging away and capping flags without me.

As for Saigons verify question....
I don't know about you....but after 1.01 my computer like yours takes about 1.30 to 2 mins to "verify" this is the part where the account server feels up your box one last time I'm assuming for punk buster reasons...
The network traffic I'm passing during this time of the loading proccess is very odd...if I break it down to packets my computer is now getting asked alot of the same questions over and over again...this is where I get confussed. The server will ask a question say "what is your name" I answer "Paul30" then the server acks the response and asks again..."what is your name"...now I'm going to assume that this is just overlooked by EA...
I have sent my trace logs to EA for this so hopefully they will stream line it when they get a chance...there are some other issues I would rather they spend there time on...

Yes, I deleted my cache a long time ago. It gets rid of the graphical lag at the map's start.
Does anyone have a fix on verifying times?

I think I just answered that....
And my bad Leaky....was trying to be helpfull

i know you did but.... but.... you.... uh.... hmm... nevermind....
I wonder if the same packet thing was just over looked or if it's there to account for lag. you know incase some packets get lost?
I'm no geek but you did a good job of explaining the packet thing. you must have to explain things like this to dummy's like me all day long.

TCP-IP communication dosen't work like that...let me try to explain..
I'm a host and your the client and we are going to talk through the numbers 1-9...
Now before we can talk we need to understand how much information each other can handle...so we ask each other what our buffer size is and then after that we assume thats how much we can toss at each other at one time and move on...for this we will assume we have agreed that you can handle 4 numbers at a time...
---------------- Start Conversation -------------
Paul30 says: 1 .... 2 .... 3 .... 4
Leaky says: I recived 1 .... 2 .... and 4
Paul30 says: 3 .... 5 .... 6 .... 7
Leaky says: I recived 6 ... and 7
Paul 30 says: 3 .... 5 .... 8 .... 9
Leaky says: I recived 3 .... 5 .... 8 .... 9
--------------- End conversation -----------------
There as you can see I was able to convey to you the numbers 1 - 9 without you missing any of them in the end... (please keep in mind I'm keeping this simple but it isn't much harder than this) now thats not what is happeneing when I talk to the account server...the conversation goes like this...
---------------- Start Conversation ---------------
Paul30 says: 1 ... 2 ... 1 ... 2
leaky says: I recived 1 .... 2 .... 1 ..... 2
Paul30 says: 1 ... 2 .... 3 .... 4
leaky says: I recived 1 .... 2 .... 3 ....4
Paul30 says: 2 .... 3 ..... 4 ..... 5
leaky says: I recived 2 .... 3 .... 4 .... 5
----------------- End Conversation ----------------
Now in this example I didn't include any packet loss like in the first example and we are still only half way through the conversation. I just keep sending you the same stuff again and again and again....in the end we will get through 1 - 9 but if you include the packet loss it will take us 3 times as long...this is a codeing error...
****EDIT****
Oh and Leaky....not knowing something dosen't mean your dumb...it just means know one has ever taken the time and explained it to you at a lvl you understood...so if you have more questions please ask.

Awesome explanation, I wish someone would have explained it to me like that when I was learning winsock.

Maybe dummy was the wrong word to use... but you know what i mean. If more of my computer friends were like you i might learn stuff faster. I still can't upload stuff to my website and install it remotely because My friends assume i know what the hell they are talking about. :)

How do you know that information about the coding error from the client to the account server Paul30? That kind of detail level is not readily apparent to a user unless you're using some sort of packet-sniffer. Just curious how you know that's all. :)
Great explanation btw!

Does anyone have a fix on verifying times?
hmm, it helped with my load times, maybe it was something I did as well, my computer is average at most, but it verifies at 1 minute now, I can say I noticed a difference between my AMD with dual channel memory as compared to my P4 with 1 gig of memory, the AMD loads about a minute faster... these are times where you have a chance to grab a beer, use the restroom :yaya: I feel for you though, anyone else have a fix for this?

You guessed it wihadmin...I'm using a packet sniffer/decoder the rest of my crap knowledge comes from being a network designer for 6 yeasr before I left to try something new...I'm still deep in the dark world of networking and security I just don't get paid for it these days.
Now I'm a systems architect for a RAID storage company called Xyratex.
