I have 2 gsata3 connectors on my mobo and 6 sata2. I read gsata3 transfers fast. Does gsata3 require a special hard-drive? Can I connect gsata instead of standard?

Read that to understand the difference between SATA3 (6gb/s) and SATA2 (3gb/s)
http://www.sata-io.org/developers/naming_guidelines.asp

As for gsata that's the same as it always has been. Gigabyte (GSATA) is controlled by the Gigabyte chip and SATA is controlled by the Intel bridges.

So if given the choice between GSATA3 and SATA2 most likely the GSATA3 will be faster just because it's 6gb/s and not 3gb/s. I am not aware of special hard drives needed to operate with the SATA3 however you will need a hard drive that is SATA3 compatible to gain the benefit of a full 6gb/s.

So be aware of that.

GSATA? Is this a Gigabyte board? SATA 3 is backwards compatible with SATA 1 and 2. I'm assuming GSATA 3 is just Gigabyte tacking a 'G' onto the port name like they did with SATA 2. If that's the case, note that the 'GSATA' ports are probably on a different controller than the other SATA ports -- just be aware of that if you use them.

SATA 3 has a theoretical max of 6 Gbit/s, which translates to 750 MB/s. But even if you use a high performance mechanical hard drive or SSD, you'll only use about 1/3 - 1/5 of the bandwidth. There may be SATA 3 hard drives hitting the market soon, if not already, but there's really no point in buying them.

SSDs are so overrated. Just bragging rights.
10k RPM Raptors are still the king of Gamer loads and more affordable.

SSDs are awesome though if you have one in a laptop while sitting in the back seat of a 4 Wheel Drive vehicle going 50mph down a dirt road where the fillings in your teeth are threatening to fall out of your head and you are vigorously pounding on your keys typing out a report in MSWord while simultaneously clicking and loading Facebook app pages in two different browsers while also listening to music.

THEN SSDs are fricken the bomb!

But for the average gamers HDDs are still king. :)

i would tend to disagree with randam access SSD's kick most all platter based out the water, and considering the majority of disks access are random and involve seek times it can be quite significant. we compared a raptor and ssd setup when the crew got their i7 machines, ssd's ere considerably faster on most everything...

though raptors are much cheaper *L*

You can connect any regular drive into the GSATA and it will lower it self down to Sata 2 speeds. GSATA is a new technology that can't quite be taken advantage of yet and probably never will be by a traditional hard drive. There may a be a few SSD drives that may be able to take advantage of it but a SSD like that will cost the price of every other part in your computer combined.

Yeah, I was going to connect through gsata but I decided to wait and read more about it since this rig is new and I really don't want to mess it up. I'm so satisfied by all the parts I bought. Everything has worked great. The only part i had to exchange was my video card. It was overheating. I exchanged it for the same thing and it is running smooth. No problems so far.
