Do I need it all to run all the time, and if not how do I make it NOT run all the time?

Damn...how many processes is that?
I see some apple stuff, (qttask, ipodservice in there too i think), Punkbuster, a SQL database service, some creative stuff for your sound card I imagine...AVG services, 'TeaTimer', some adobe stuff.
How much RAM do you have Bob?

Did you download AVG 9.0?

AVG did something just tonight and I haven't questioned it.
But this coctail of shit lokks stupid t o me.
I don't know how to turn this stuff off.
Surely, a guy that due to his shitty connetion does very little when he sits down here , doesn't need all this stuff running...I'm fresh off the short bus, but even I know this menu is facked.
How do i fix this?

And that's not coutning videos that I just click and walk away from until they're done.

If thats your new laptop get rid of AVG and download Microsoft Security Essentials. I have had some pretty good luck with Microsofts anti-virus so far. And ever since AVG 9.0 came, I have been less than impressed with AVG.

dump AVG and use Microsoft Security Essentials. Works good and has a small footprint.

Bob has bigger problems then choosing between AVG and MSE.

AB - If you're not connected to the internet, then you shouldn't be getting viruses or anything, unless you're swapping software with other people...

Well, I do surf as much as I can stand.
I always thought AVG was good. I'll look into the MS thing.
But I don't need ITunes stuff running. I don't use it at all. For one.

Yeah, I switched to Avast after AVG 9 came out, it really blows (kicked me to desktop every five mins). I had the same problem Bob when I had AVG.

well bob since you are not playing online games you can uninstall punkbuster, if you still play anline games every once in a while just turn pb a and pb b off in your task manager!!
btw i have never seen that many stuff running on a pc before...so my question for you is: "If you make a backup do you also backup your cookies??" :D

I've had a few of my customers register for Avast, but Avast isn't mailing out any more numbers. Their latest download only lasts 30 days unless you register it.

I saw the new orange avast and put it on a pc.
It would let me register either. Probably a bug.
I put in one of my old avast registrations and it said good till 02/01/11
I used the link in the email to go to faq registration/license.html and
got a 404 page not found.

The crazy thing is the only thing I was "using" was Explorer. LOL
I'd like to get all the crap out of my start up menu.

Windows Process Explorer will show u what all dem thangs are so u can decide if you want them.

CrapCleaner has a very simple startup manager to disable items that startup each time your pc boots.

Just did the first thing
Not sure what this means though...one can't assume that since the obvious is now glaring, that AB know what the next step is.
If one process's color is shit, how do I delete it from the start menu? NOt that I know whcich color is shit.
Why the hell don't some of you 'perts live closer!!

I can't even open that screen shot after 3 minutes. I'm fixin to go all postal on some satellite mo fo.
This...and my life is encompassed....is shit due to this facking BS connection....somebody must pay.
If anyone else here EVER decides to buy their dream home, sacrificing high speed....I will personally come to your location and kick your ass.
F*ck this....I wish I still lived in the $350/mo crackhouse.

I'm just curious AB. Just how close is your nearest neighbor with an actual hard line internet connection?

I can see the end of the cable from here. It is 1/2 mile, ten power poles away.
Did the second thing...saved my cookies though. I don't need to be trying to rememeber p[assowrds and shit..
didn't see the start-up menu and running processes shrink much.
Haven't uninstalled AVG yet.
Getting a bit tired and may save that for another day.

It only looks bad.
You're running 57 processes.
4 of them are the windows you have open.
5 of them are ipod/itunes quicktime.
You are using 37.66% of your physical ram, if you have 2 gig ram you are using 771 mg and that does seem high.
Any way that program is to make it easier to understand what is running.
Install and run the second program.
Click "Tools" then click "Startup"
Pick out easy ones first like quicktime which doesn't need to start till you actually use itunes or ipod, if you even use those.
Right click the word "Yes" under the enabled column, chose disable.
WTF is SPAMfighter update service.
You only need AVG or Avast or MSE (thats up for debate in these forums).
I use Avast for the boot time scan and have my customers use AVG for ease of interface (easy for inexperienced users). If memory serves me right the last test showed avast at 95% detection and avg at 94%. These being the highest of free protection.
Back on topic.
With your slow internet you want to carefully get rid of anything that says update, updater, etc.
The most common bandwidth eater I see up here is weatherbug.
Take your pc to a buddies with a fast internet connection, buy you buddy supper or beer or both.
download teamviewer and I can remote in and clean it all up.

I'll say I lost A LOT of faith in AVG over the last few weeks. Not only does it keep flagging stuff on TVGuide.com, it had an epic fail on one of my clients. One of those 'scareware' fake anti virus programs got into their PC. Shut down AVG and made the PC worthless. A few months ago it was flagging an update for MalwareBytes. I'm done with AVG..
@ AB. The max length of a cat5 cable is about 100m (328ft). You're about 1300ft to short to do a hardline. A direct wireless signal? I've read about people getting amazing distances with WiFi stuff. 100+ miles. If you're friendly with one of your neighbors who has a hardline, there is no doubt in my mind. It could be done. I have no clue what the landscape is around your place though.. So I'm talking out of my ass.

I can see the end of the cable from here. It is 1/2 mile, ten power poles away.
Using his wifi router or a second one on its on account at his house.
2 x 1000MW amps, misc antenna extensions and a couple of old sat dishes to intensify line of sight. If you didn't need towers for line of sight about $400 in equipment.
Of course if you can see the poles it is probably DSL and you might want to see what kind of speed is available.

the biggest reason i havent moved/built on my land is conncetivity. so we are staying in our crack house for now... for the faster connection. i enjoy gaming and "online" too much to move.
before we bought this house, we had a good opportunity to buy an awesome house with land.. etc.. good price. we turned it down because of lack of gaming prospects.
anyway, good luck bob, we miss you in ts....

Sorry I caught this thread so late, but AVG is crap. It used to be one of the best, when it did not run 7 different background processes. I had a full home license. I got rid of that, and now use Avast Free. With Avast, you can actually "control" what the AV is protecting... ie: system files, browser search, emails, etc....
And I also heard that Win7 does not run the background processes unless you are using that app. I have a copy of Win7, just waiting to build my new machine, before using it.

i think we need to run down to bobs for a weekend with reems of cable and make him internets!
one of the things that might stop us moving to better places ( like NM) is that if we get a place with some nice land, we forgo 50mb/s downloads...
for me it is a no brainer if i am not doing IT work... take the land.... but if i am doing IT work i NEED speed...
my wife and kids might suffer a bit with slow or none existent internets but id do not care *L*
i have to admit being spoiled these days in the city... if i had the money i would get the 100mb/s upgrade...

I think you are dillusional.
I too, thought that I could sacrifice gaming and broadband to enjoy a leisurely life in the country. And I do love where I live. It's freakin awesome!
BUT....hmmmm.....how do I esplain this so I am clear?.....
IT FUCKIN SUCKS NOT HAVING BROADBAND!!!!
SUCKS!!!
It's like the old saying....now I forget what it is ! LOL
Something about you never appreciate what you have until it's gone?
It's truly is a life changing event....and I wish I had considered the impact more seriously. There are some really nice country places just a tiny bit closer to town.
Had I moved 20 miles from town, I would have no valid complaint.
That last 1/2 mile is a MOFO. I really thought the cable company would accomodate a long time big package subscriber with a little more wire.
So far, dick and nothing is their response.
Not only have I lost online gaming, but I'm essentially losing contact with a great group of friends here.
The forums are ok...ok grewat, but it's not the same as having a few beers and fragging with your buddies on team speak.
At least not for me.
I miss you guys.

I still haven't made it to the cable outfit to discuss. Too many meetings this week to bug out early.
:minigun:
When I call I can tell the person I'm speaking with doesn't have a clue what to do. Once, they transferred me to an engineer. WTF? LOL
I need to go there, have them whip out the service area map, point to my location and the location the wire stops, and tell them I want a price to run the extra distance.
Surely they can't say no to that. There must be a number.
