Am I wrong or is this saying no sound card is better than a sound card? This really pissed me off that sound cards aren't utilized! It seems to cause more probs in some games than it is
worth.

What I got out of this article are a couple of things:

1. Their primary platforms are the 360/PS3. win32 was their main platform in the days of 1942 and BF2. Since then, the main platform seem to have shifted over to console.
2. They are trying to develop on win32 (more likely port the software from console onto win32 platform), instead of dealing with the multitude of audio hardware/drivers, they're taking the common route, which is to use the CPU to process the audio. IMO, this allows them to use platform-independent code inside the game.
3. They don't have to worry about audio compatibility and support issues with the plethora of audio hardware out there.

So wait... my Sound card isn't being used at all? How is sound being outputted? Sorry if that sounds stupid.

Also, 5.1 surround had BETTER be enabled

I think that it's not using your soundcard to process the signals, but is still using the soundcard as a path to output the sound to speakers if you're connecting via analog method (ie. the ol' red/white cables). It'll bypass the sound card completely if there another way on your mobo to output Digital Audio Output such as optical.
