So I'm now 1500$ lighter from filing immigration forms for my wife's green card. I did not realize how much this shit costs. Holy fuck.

I am ready for my citizenship though we do not have the $1000 or so to spend on it right now (it is $675 for the test and more biometrics)
it cost us quite a bit for my green card because i was here *ahem* too long after entering.... but hell whats 5 or so years between friends eh? i paid my taxes ( strange really if you think about it) but there really was not much of an issue, i also lost my origional passport shortly after arrival so my replacement had NO record of entry... luckily i knew my old passprt number by heart and i rattled it off to the immigration interviewer ( who was this all american huge Quarterback looking guy with short cropped hair, really nice, but i swear he had a .45 taped to his back or something.... just in case *L*
he was skeptical at first but found out it was valid and my arrival/departure list was as long as his arm ( i nearly filled my passport in 2 years)
he then took my "new" passport and looked at me.... at which point a peed a little in my pants *L* just a couple of drops mind.... but he got out his awesome stamper and approved my application w00t!
Our biggest hurdle was the affidavit of support since my wife did not earn enough to meet the requirements for a family of four at that time, so we had to ask her brother...
to me it still isa sword of damocles until i can be a citizen... it was nice of him though and they sure as hell ask for everything!
it helped our case that i was already married for 3 years at that point so it was not a marriage of conveinience... still it is scary, it was even more scary knowing i was probably the only person in the office ( there were alot of people) who spoke english as a primary language *L*
we went past one office as we were leaving witha very pissed off black woman in it and about 35 people spilling out the door! i wonder if they all got approved *L*
good luck though
yes you REALLY have to want to become a citizen... which i do it will be all worth it in the end...
the test... i am not bothered about...

My mom just got her citizenship last year. She had to wait almost two years for it, probably as a result of her FBI clearance. I don't remember how much the cost was though.
If you're not a citizen, it's worth your while to become one. Any legal trouble and you're likely to just get deported.

yep that is a big draw, and of course participating in the political system :D
and not having to renew the bloody thing evey 10 years it is not as if i lose my british citizenship either...so there is always a backup plan....
