View Full Version : Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta/Demo
=HR=Gumby!!!

This may be old news, but according to DICE there will be a PC beta for BF:BC2 sometime in December. This will be followed by a full blown demo in January or February of 2010. Color me excited.

does anyone knows if this version has big maps like the rest BF's? or are scaled down like MW style?
=HR=Gumby!!!
11-06-2009, 05:36 PM
AFAIK there have been no confirmed specifics as to overall map size. Going on released pics and what we saw in BC1, I'd say perhaps not quite as large as the biggest BF2 maps, but certainly nothing as small as CoD4 as the norm.
Great thing about PC, as long as they give us Dedis, we can make it what we want. Regardless of what comes on the box.
Anyone have any links to something more concrete than my speculation?

It's a multiplayer beta of one map. Just think of the BF2 demo when it came out and how much we played it every day.
I don't have a PS3, it's my roomies. I'm not at my apartment during the week, either so not much point giving you his PSN id.
Hell, I'd love to play though.

I found the best part of the game to be the sound.
It's absolutely incredible. No game has ever sounded this good, IMO.
Crotch-Rot
11-23-2009, 09:29 AM
That's a good point Filthy. The sound is very good. While on the PS3, I don't have a headset to communicate with the squad, but I hear a lot of canned voice work screaming about enemy contacts, swearing, taunting, etc... The creaking and clanking of mechanized armor is fearsome! The whomp-whomp-whomp of the UAV helicopter is pretty sweet! The explosions and environmental sound is outstanding!
The graphics on the PS3 is pretty awesome. There are plumes of smoke from blown up tanks, fire raging on a recently disabled armor, sand blowing across the roads. I'm playing on my projector, 106" wide, and it's pretty fucking awesome. It's going to be hard to go back to my 19" monitor for March's release!
Did I mention the destructible environments? it's fucking awesome when implemented right! I was in an Abrams and several enemy soldiers ran behind a concrete wall for cover. In the past, that meant they are safe. Not any more, I turned my turret and blew up the wall revealing where they were hiding. Then I sent them to meet their maker. Suh-weet!!!

Here is an intermediate solution. Sitting a foot and a half back from it at first made my eyes dart because my brain literally had to rewire itself to process the increase from a 22" to this puppy. I have to say playing TF2 on it is an experience even itself. And hell 28" for 300$ and free shipping.... If you have the money it's probably the cheapest investment you can make for how drastically it improves your gaming experience.

You do know the beta is only for PS3, right?
In December 2009, DICE will invite players to participate in a PC open beta. Then, early next year, all players worldwide will get to experience this premier shooter when DICE releases a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer DEMO on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation 3 and PC.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be in stores on March 2, 2010 in North America and March 5, 2010 in Europe for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC. The Limited Edition is available now for pre-order at participating retailers worldwide (while supplies last).

32 players isn't bad considering the level sizes are smaller this time around.
i actually found moments in BF2 and 2142 where it almost seemed like the maps were too big or other times when it seemed like there were too many players.

What the hell? 32 Players?
After playing the PS3 beta (with only 24 players) I found there to always be action around me, so I don't think it'll be an issue.
Another thing is that the map seemed to be better streamlined for long distance combat as well as close quarters, when in BF2 you could be running around for minutes trying to find or catch up to the action.

LordBeer
12-01-2009, 06:26 PM
I thought I had read before that the reason it's only 32 players is partially due to the destructible environment. Everytime someone puts a hole in a building, it's gotta go out to every player. It would just be too much bandwidth to have that going on with 64. :dunno: I cant find the article though so..
Oddly enough, I actually find myself agreeing with Bonez.
i actually found moments in BF2 and 2142 where it almost seemed like the maps were too big or other times when it seemed like there were too many players.
Yeah like the start of Karkand with everyone piled up on each other spamming nades and Karkand again for running all over the map to retake one of the back flags.

With 24 players on the PS3 beta, it felt just about right. There's always action and stuff to do. It felt more like organized chaos vs the outright madness that is 64-players. (not that I didn't enjoy the 64-player madness).

Yeah I didnt buy it either FOR ANY SYSTEM.. Not that it mattered since they made enough cash to land people on the moon with the game.. Meh, Im happy. I saved $60 by not buying it. With that money I managed to buy Borderlands, Dragon Age, and still have about $15 to use for another game. Im quite happy with the amount of gameplay I'm getting with just those 2 games vs the 6hr single player of MW2. Hell I'm just starting to have fun with CoD5's Zombie Mode. I made out just fine and have no regrets about my decision.
I dont think it's a good idea for people on either side of the issue to tease.. It wont lead to anything productive. Just drop it and enjoy whatever game your playing.
Anyway... I wait longer for Bad Company 2 to be released on the PC. I cant see shit trying to play it on my old ass CRT TV. as for game size, as long as everything is balanced and battle is at a "normal" tempo, i dont care.
no dedicated servers, no mod help, low server size have me believing that the other devs of the other game said f u to the multiplayer community. i dont think smaller server size by itself is an issue.
ive played plenty of good 24 and 32 player games. gimme toys and targets and im ready to go.
some pluses for wih are, it should be easier to keep servers full and admin them. that will be nice.

definitely picking up BC2, always liked the play style better
in a building and need to snipe off to the left but there aren't any windows, toss a grenade into a corner, and bang, you got yourself some cover positions.

As promised here is the PC Blog on the Beta & a few other things, yes some people, places, and things may have leaked a little something, but we are here to clarify everything and make it all official since we can now commit to the listed dates! :-)
BETA Details:
Beta Begins/Ends
Jan 28th/Feb 25th
Map Name
Port Valdez
Players
32
Game Mode
Rush
Environment
Snow
Theme
Vehicle and Infantry
Back Story
The battle for Port Valdez is fought alongside the waterline towards a great oil industrial landscape in the Alaskan mountains. Using basically everything they've got the Russian forces are launching an airborne assault to knock out the oil industries in the area. In their arsenal there are Main Battle Tanks as well as fast-moving Quad Bikes and mobile armored AA. It's a vehicle focused battle, but with plenty of infantry combat.
How to Download: Check back to the Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta Page (http://bit.ly/4UXgCZ) closer to beta launch date for download instructions.
How To Get Access: Reserve Battlefield Bad Company 2 is the most sure fire way, but we are still working with Retailers & e-Tailers that wish to participate (it's up to them). If you're eager to ensure you get in the two confirmed distributors to Pre-Order are the EA Store (http://bit.ly/4Qb6FH) and at GameStop.com. We'll have another Blog at a later date with an update on the retailers & e-Tailers that have teamed up with us as well as alternate channels to obtain a Closed Beta Key.
Misc. Details
Steam Beta: Yes there was a leaked image of a Package file we propped on Steam. People with illegal accounts can see games in this environment, but this is not a Beta in the term of Public Test Beta, but a real development Beta installer client for the Steam version of the full game. We are however working with Steam to have the Public PC Beta available on Steam, but can't confirm this quite yet so cross your fingers Steam users. :-)
Anti Cheat: We're going with PunkBuster supporting the same options BF2 and BF2142 had to run unranked without PunkBuster.
Mod Tools: There will not be mod tools for BFBC2. However a majority of the the games logic is controlled by the server and there will be Serverside control options for the dedicated servers.
Public Server Files: We will not distribute these publicly. There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers.

^We dont know if that will be true for the final release. Plus it took them a long time after the final release of BF2 to release the mod tools. And if I recall correctly, Dice/EA released the mod tools in 2 parts. They held up the release of the 2nd part of the tools for some reason. I assume to slow down the modders though. Remember how long it took for the first BF2 mods to show up? It took forever, I want to say at least 2yrs after the initial release.

I wonder if it's even possible to run an unranked server at all for BC2.

I think they going back to like in BF2 when only "trusted" server providers could put the game on your dedicated server.

That's an oddly formed sentence. Sounds like they're saying, without PB your server is going to be unranked. With BF2, we have the server files to set up unranked servers. But for this release, it is sounding like they're saying they are not distributing the server files altogether. In any case, without the ability to set up servers and w/o mod tools, there won't be any mods. IMO, this is like getting fucked w/ a dinner and a reach around where-as MW2 is just a straight fuck w/o any extras.

Like Snake said and I agree, The mod tools will probably be released at a later date.
March 2010 is pretty far off. And why the f#$k do you need to go to best buy or gamestop to get a damn beta key. Wow, this may be a start of a new era to reserve a beta key(marketing BS).
How is that any different then having to be a fileplanet subscriber?

yea, the file planet subscribe does kinda suck.
it looks like they were only talking about the demo their putting up in terms of mod tools and such.

Reserved my copy and am awaiting my beta key on the 28th. Suggestion, gamestop doesn't charge until it ships, I'm unsure how the preorder works on the EA site. Way I look at it is I get the perks, extra weapons and I get to try it before March for free.
As for mod tools, I also agree that they will be released in time. BF2 didn't come with mod tools if I remember correctly and the frostbite 2 engine is completely new. Just going to take some time.
And crotch, MW2 wasnt just a straight fuck, it was prision rape.

just read this,
because im biased i am choosing to believe drayu and that mod tools will be released later, it has the the reason for battlefield series success... all the bfs would have been history after a year without the mods... so they will release them hopefully. they know that mods have added alot of extra dollars to their pocket.
i would really be upset if the modding ended with bf2.
however, im looking forward to the beta. might take a vacation day and soak up some early bf bc2.

Anyone know a good place to pre-order for shipping to Canada?\
My total for gamestop came out to 65 bucks. Fuck that.
I just want to pre-order to gain access to the beta. or can I get access another way?
You could pre-order from gamestop get into the beta then switch it to instore pickup. You don't get charged until it's shipped anyways.
Or you can do digital download from EA. (I don't really like their downloader though personally it seems pieced together poorly.)

This was also included:
The Battlefield Bad Company 2 Limited Edition comes with:
* 4 x Vehicle Warfare Unlocks
o Improved Vehicle Armor – An Up-Armor package mounted on all vehicle types decreases the effect of both explosive and penetrating warheads, significantly improving vehicle survivability.
o Vehicle Alternate Fire - Additional weapon packages mounted for the driver of all armored vehicles, greatly expands the range of targets the vehicle can successfully engage and destroy.
o Vehicle Motion Sensor – Upgraded Sensor to locate enemy units in direct proximity to the vehicle.
o Tracer Dart Pistol – Launched by compressed air, this magnetic dart attaches to any vehicle surface, allows friendly shoulder launched rockets to lock on to and track moving targets even beyond line of sight.
* 2 x Classic Battlefield 1943 Weapons
o M1A1 Submachine Gun – Popular with Paratrooper and Commando units in WW2 for its rate of fire and stopping power the M1A1 is still seen in the hands of paramilitaries today. Reliable but heavy, this classic weapon is still a powerful force in the hands of a Battlefield Veteran.
o M1911 Pistol – Adopted in 1911 by the US Army the M1911 saw heavy service in WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. Highly customized M1911 are still favored by Special Operations forces for its reliability and the power of its large .45 caliber round

You get all that with any preorder you do no matter where you go. The way that they word the bit about getting the silenced AK makes it seem like it is already in the game but just an unlockable that gamestop customers get first.
Reserve Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and get instant access to the AKS-74 assault rifle for multiplayer action. Firing over 650 rounds a minute, this silent but deadly little beauty will give you maximum pwnage over your friends and enemies. Available for online and in-store customers, while supplies last.
Online Customers: Code to unlock the AKS-74 assault rifle and redemption instructions will be emailed to reservation customers one day prior to the game's release.
In-Store Customers: A pre-order card with code and instructions for downloading the AKS-74 assault rifle will be arriving in stores shortly before the game's release date.

if you preorder online, you are paying for it all. although, with gamestop you arent billed until it ships.
if you walk into an ebgames and preorder and pick up on release day, normally they require $5 to reserve the game. then pay in full when pick up. in store preorder does not include beta key that im aware of.

The thing that concerns me with Steam is all the problems I see people post about having issues using patches or mods.
Anyone have problems with steam so far in this regard? If not, I'll probably pre-order
Ragan
01-26-2010, 06:30 PM
I have never had a patching error other than it patching when the program starts up on computer start up and that is the time I am often wanting to do something else with my internet connection. As for buying a game pre-release, I did it once and had only one problem with installing and that was L4D2, which they said it had a bug that popped up and you just had to do the verify game cache in the game properties. I enjoy steam and have ordered this one on it again.
It's not an issue of the patching not working properly, but instead an issue with the release date of the patch. The release date of a steam patch is usually later than the patches for the stand alone game.
LordBeer
01-26-2010, 08:04 PM
I'll use IL-2 as an example for rather tardy Steam patches. Steam is about 3 months behind on getting the latest patch into their system. I just used the normal patch to get it up to date. The only real problem with it was telling the patch where the location of the game was. I'd also seen people manually install patches for Red Faction Guerrilla.
This doesnt mean that Bad Company 2 will allow this, but Im not that worried about it. As long as you dont verify the game files in Steam, I dont see how it'll be an issue. (That would remove any changes made by a user installed patch) Although to be 100% honest, this is wishful thinking since I have no idea how it will really work.

Big Battfield Bad Company 2 PC Beta Blog of Epic Goodness!
BY: GordonVanDyke POSTED: Jan 26, 2010, 11:33AM COMMENTS: 40 (Login Required to Comment)
When's the Beta
First, let's start by making the official time and date of the Beta the start of this Blog in what will be and EPIC moment in DICE's PC History! The PC Beta begins this Thursday, January 28th at approximately 6pm CET, 12pm EST, and 9am PST time!!!!!!! :-D
Where to Get It
The Client will be downloadable from server partner websites and Steam starting at the above listed time at a file size of 1.5GB. Here's a hyper-link reminder http://bit.ly/4GJk2a on which retailers will provide PC Beta access through pre-ordering.
Why we're Having a Beta
The Beta is happening for many reasons, like testing the infrastructure, hosting stability, and gameplay tuning (FOV, Weapon Balance, etc...) that no amount of internal testing could provide better than real world exposure. This means there will also be times of choppiness, lag, disconnects, CTDs or other issues a Beta version of any MP game would have. We'll have feedback methods similar to the PS3 Beta as well to ensure your input is gathered and heard.
Advanced warning: there will be things updated in the final game, like a Server browser with more functions, optimizations, performance tweaks, and learning's from the Beta.
This truly is a Beta, so remember that all feedback is appreciated and wanted! :-)
Hosting the Beta
Renting of Beta servers will not be possible, but we'll work closely with all our RSPs* to ensure there is always enough capacity for each individual regions.
Where to Download the Beta
We'll distribute with many partners as possible to ensure the fastest DLs no matter your location around the world. Current know locations and methods will be EADM, Steam, Torrents (only get this from legit sources, i.e. an RSP*), and all our RSP's.
Getting Started In the Beta
STEP 1: Make sure you have at least 5GB free on your HDD and then download and Install BFBC2! :-D
STEP 2: Once installation is completed (install size will be around 1.5GB) start the client and click the login button. You will then be prompted to sign in with your EA Account. If you don't have an EA Account you'll be able to create one in the same screen. (You may also create your EA Account in advance HERE)
STEP 3: Enter the unique PC Beta Code during the log in process to authenticate your participation in the Beta.
Step 4: Create your Soldier name (this will lock that name to your EA account for retail if you want to keep it).
Note: You will not be able to play or access any multiplayer menus without being authenticated. After the Beta Key is registered it will be tied to your EA Account and no longer valid for new registrations. Our game will use SecuROM for the Beta and Final games .exe, for more info on how SecuROM works in BFBC2 please read this Blog to learn about it in more detail.

Indeed they are different. The thrust (giggity) of the last bit of the thread was about workarounds for the (sometimes) differences in Steam and non-steam patch release times on the after the release of the game.
Using that key you can install the game independent of steam if the need should arise.

Okay, first impressions, its fun, fast paced and easy to die. I love the mounted machine gun with the shield, I traded shots with three snipers behind some rocks for 5 minutes till I was getting flanked and had to take down some other guys leaving me open to the snipers. Its gunna be a blast when the game is finished if DICE doesnt continue its abandonment of its games after release. I dont see much need for the health boxes that Medics can drop with the abilty to regen life ala COD. Vehicles are cool, its hard to shoot people, anyone really, weapons have a huge kick. That will probably take time to learn how to shoot in the game.
