Anyone own a Big Green Egg? http://www.biggreenegg.com/
I have been thinking about getting 1, but want to hear unbiased reviews, only 1's i have seen were on thier website.
I think I want the medium sized, but some people say you can only do small turkeys on a medium others say you can do a large turkey.
Right now it is just me, Mrs.PoopStick, and BabyPoopStick. no family in the area but my have more Poopsticks later.. this info is for sizing suggestions. I would like to smoke things and do thanksgiving turkey on it.
Im thinking AtomicBob may have run across BGE's in his BBQing days. but any comments and size suggestions would be great.

That's a negative dinky. I haven't seen one.
I build my own grills, but that's a perk of working in the steel fabrication industry.
I will say that for "smoking" you need indirect heat. The BGE has a fire under the grill and will not slow cook without a lot of babysitting.
Smokers look like this.

If I had the $$ I would buy one of these. http://www.americangrills.com/
They are the best out there in my opinion right now. They run off propane or pellets or charcol depending on what you want to run at the moment. My friend ownes the company so I have there meat all the time and I get to taste test some of there newer modles. I have had alot of meat from alot of different BBQ's in my time but this is by far the best. The best thing about these is in there national contests when all the other BBQ makers are out all night before the competition slow cooking there meat, my friend just sets there pellet feeder to the right setting and then goes home and coms back the next morning to a perfect steak without having to tend it every hour like the other guys. Read the website and if you decide to buy one tell them Russell sent you. And no, I dont get commision for this. I just eally think they are the best out there.

For smoking meat, I got a grill similar to Bob's second pic.
I think it was like $120 or so at the local Wally-World. I've had it for a few years and love it.

This is not the way I use to grill. Weber charcol, then onto big gas grill. The big green egg takes some getting use to. Best steak I have ever grilled. Heat grill to 600 put on some thick seasoned fillets 2 minutes, flip for 2 minutes then close air holes(technical term) and let cook 4-6 minutes. Depends thickness and how you like em. Unbelievable. Ribs- Before this grill mine were not worth eating. I like a dry rub. The ribs turned out incredible, besides seasoning I threw on some wet wood chips to add a little smoked flavor. The first thing I cooked I ruined - chicken. I kept checking on it and it didn't look done. Turns out meat doesn't shrink when using this grill and I was expecting it to. I have tried a few veggies with success. I am a rookie at grilling but the family is very happy and there is finally flavor in our meals instead of the bland food we have been use to.
They sell charcol that burns very slow and produces almost no ash. Get that also.
I need to try some of your specials. joe

yes, that was a friend of yours?
i am wondering what would be a good size for me. I went to the local retailer here, but they just started carring BGE's so they aren't very helpful when it comes to experiance type questions

Yes. I've been trading stocks with him for a few years. He hangs out over at my website but I forgot he had asked me about that egg some time back. He seems to like it. I need to ask him how the inside is set up.
