Volume Evening on audio tracks

I was wondering if there is a way to make audio files have the same loudness throughout. My problem now is I'm listening to the archives of the Ricky Gervais show and at points they talk to one person who talks low, but he says such insane things that Ricky Gervais (and usually me as well) burst into laughter and his laughter is especially loud in comparison to the the other guy so if you have it loud enough to hear the low talk, your ears get raped by the laughter and if you have it low enough to where your ears aren't assaulted, you cant hear what he is saying. I know ipods/itunes have volume limiting options so that it doesn't get too loud, but as far as I can tell, it just means the volume is lower on the whole track so you still can't hear the low talk. Any suggestions? Solutions would be much appreciated.

Some sort of compressor would be ideal. Limits the whole range of the track so it doesnt get too quiet or loud. I'd bet theres an app for it (if its an iPood/Phone)

Hmm, I tried using free programs off of google and first I had to convert from mp3 to wav then compress the wav files, but that turned them into .ape files which I need to convert to an mp3 to play on an ipod, but that requires using the program I compressed the files with to uncompress them then convert so...I don't know if it's possible.

Try Audacity. Its fancy.

you need to normaliz(s)e the track most sound stuff can do this i use audacity myself, and or soundforge....
they have it usually under the effects part, the problem is that you haveto do it for all your nasty tracks which could be alot WINAMP used to have a cool normalizer plugin, i think media player has it too but will take a long time
