Well after eying this one for A LONG time, I finally dove in and bought it as a treat for myself.

Black Shark is a helicopter simulation that focuses on the Ka-50 'Black Shark' (NATO designation Holkum-A). A single seat attack chopper Russia came out with a few years ago. The game was made by Eagle Dynamics which is the crew that came out with Lock On: Modern Air Combat and is part of their Digital Combat Simulator series. As of now, it is the only part of the series but plans are in the works for the A-10 to join the fun. Rumors say that the AH-64 is on the way after that. We'll see.

The game is most definitely a hard core sim. An example being that if you want, you can go though the whole start up sequence before take off (Pass). I'm having enough trouble figuring out how to navigate the damn thing. You kinda have to be able to use the auto pilot in this game. It's a single seat chopper so you need all the help you can get when trying to target and fire on the enemy. It's a rather squirrelly bird. This is good for maneuvering and bad when trying to level out and target a tank that's 5k out.

If you think you're a bad ass chopper pilot in BF2. Well, this will kick you ass. Ever heard of a Vortex Ring State. It's when a chopper gets caught up in it's own downwash and drops like a rock. I've only done it a few times so far and have yet to recover from one.

The game is one of the most beautiful things I've seen. Flying around cities and the countryside looks great, but flying though mountain canyons is just amazing (Story to add about that). Runs fairly well at max resolution with a 8800 GTS. It will stutter around cities from time to time and if you're in the middle of a full on battle with dozens of missiles going back and forth... My PC doesnt like it much. Probably should turn down the settings but nuts to that. One shouldnt be flying around in the middle of those battles anyway. EVERYONE will throw EVERYTHING at you if they think they can hit you. I've been blasted by the main guns on M2 Bradleys, the 50 cal on M1-A2, and had plenty of AT/TOW missiles shot at me. Good way to check out the detail of the damage model I guess.

So what was the best fuckup so far? Well other then the Vortex Ring stuff, I havent been crashing much. I did have an incident in the mountains though that was entertaining. I jumped into an escort mission. Was going to fly along with some transports and give em cover while they setup a base in the mountains. 'Ok, seems easy enough' Had fun going though the mountains and checking out the terrain then it happened. I had been warned that the chopper wouldnt fly well at high altitude and to be wary of icing conditions. Well I could see the blade deicing button but I didn't hit the engine intake de-icers. So I'm sitting there in a nice hover when all sorts of 'Uh Oh' noises start blaring and a slight decent starts to occur. I add some collective and nothing. More bad noises.. I figure that I'm going to hit the side of the mountain so I go to the external view and watch as I rather slowly hit it. The tail breaks off and at 1st I'm kinda amazed it didnt blow up. Then the slide began. My airframe had become a multi-ton and multimillion toboggan and slide down the whole mountain. It DID explode when it hit the bottom. Wish I had a video of it..

If you got some patience, I would recommend it. While it is rather tricky, the in game tutorials are rather helpful and the DCS forums are full of helpful folk. There arent a lot of Sims being released anymore so it's nice to support the few developers that bring them out.

Thanks for sharing LB. I wondered when someone here was gonna pick this up. :D That video makes me want a TrackIR, so bad. And the whole idea of a hardcore sim makes me miss my Falcon 4 days.

Welcome sir.

I played Falcon 4 back in the day. I can tell you one big difference between Black Shark and Falcon 4. Black Shark hasnt crashed on me yet. I wanted to love Falcon 4 so badly but it just ran like ass..

Hmm.. I wasnt thinking about a track IR. I was thinking a HOTAS setup, but a track IR could solve an in game issue. I could use track IR to look around and switch the joystick hi-hat to slew onto targets. Also the Track IR would sure be handy in racing games.

thanks for posting, i was wondering what game you were referring to in other posts.

the only helicopter sim i learned everything in and dominated was longbow II. had a pc built just to handle the graphics and gameplay when it came out.

played it for months while i was in college and had the time to learn. so much stuff to do, we devided up the in flight duties, one person on the flight controls and one person manning the keyboard and all the functions on it. was awesome once i learned to do everything.

this game looks great, graphics awesome. i just dont think i can spend the energy or time doing that again. maybe in the future or maybe with lots o auto functions turned on.

cool stuff..

Yeah Beer, I didn't play it when it first came out, but bought a used copy on eBay in 2003ish and played with some of the mods people put out for it. SuperPak4 and BMS where what I used but some people did OpenFalcon. Then a company bought the rights to it, and released F4: Allied Force as a retail box, which included many of the mods rolled up in to one stable and awesome package. I'm tempted to load it back up, along with this. You might scope it out if you're in the mood.

Also had a Thrustmaster Cougar for a while, that was a badass stick. :D

@ SoupyC - Hmm. I think I still know where my disk and manual are. I remember it came in a rather nice spiral bound package. Might be a bit before I try that though. I think I can only handle learning one sim at a time. I can already see myself getting pissed because I cant drop chaff or turn on the radar in the Black Shark (It has neither FYI). Still.. Might have to check it out.

@ Papasan - Aww.. It's actually easier to learn then Lock On was. Mostly because the tutorials in LOMAC sucked in my opinion. Every time I go back to LOMAC, I know it's going to take me 30mins to relearn how to use the radar. Never played Longbow but I did play just about every other of the Jane's simulations. Only real remnant of that studio is the Sonalysis guys who make Dangerous Waters (an excellent multi platform naval sim).

I've already got a pretty decent take off check list in Black Shark down. I think it was easier to learn because things happen at a slower pace. You're not rocketing forward at mach 2 while trying to figure out how to shoot. You can take things a little easier. Once you spot the bad guys, you can stop and hover while trying to figure out how to shoot.. It's nice to take a stand off position while learning instead of having your ass shot off. Although the Ka-50 can take some decent damage. Most ground fire you can fly away from, missiles are another story.

Should note that while I'm still pretty early in the campaign, it seems really well done. 1st mission in it was just kinda a sight seeing tour to get to learn the terrain that you'll be fighting in. Flying in formation with a Mi-24 Hind while the guy tells you about all the landmarks your passing. I didnt think much about it at the time but it really was a useful flight. If your onboard systems get shot to hell, you'll loose your moving map and nav aids. Happened to me when a bunch of M2 Bradleys sent me a bunch of 25mm 'care packages'. Knowing the terrain would be the only way one would find their way home in that situation. FYI - I didnt make it back to base when it happened to me. I had one of the vortex ring state things happen and I crashed. Was just trying to check out the external damage.. Bah.

If anyone is thinking of getting it, I wouldnt bother with the digital download from the DCS website. It's cheaper to get it though newegg. Was about $35. No idea how the multi players works in this but I'd be happy to try and smooth over any bumps anyone runs into. Or I could direct you to those who know an assload more then me. :)

I've been wondering about picking this up, but wanted to hear some reviews from people I knew first. Looks like I'll be doing another Newegg order!

Well I have about 10hrs of flight time in the Ka-50 now with 1.5 of those being night time flying. I've made some observations about things. First off those laser guided AT missiles are a PAIN! I've been hit by them way to much while I'm dicking around trying to settle into a hover. I will get a laser warning and it will say the direction but I'm still fussing with the craft. Trying to maneuver out of the way isnt even on my mind when I get hit, and those things hit hard. They're made to take out tanks.. Imagine what it does to a chopper! It will usually kill the pilot on impact so there isnt any trying to limp home or eject. You're dead.. Bah..

I've gotten great at using the trim but not great and canceling all trim inputs. The trim in a chopper is a lot different from a plane. If you're not careful with things then you're aircraft will be a bitch to fly. (You'll loose track of the actual center) So while I'm trying to fix all the trimming I've done.. WHAM!! ATGM in the cockpit.. :( I've almost got it.

I gotta find a good profile for my X52 for this. And do the lessons! :D I can't wait, this looks so awesome.

Well I got some more pointers. Make sure you know how to reset the trim to the center position. Makes things a lot easier when trying to settle into a hover if it gets all out of wack. The other pointer is to setup deadzones on your joystick. I guess it your joystick has a lot of 'noise' in it, the trim will kinda go wonky at times. The joystick will not accept any inputs after a trim until it is centered. So if the joystick is putting out noise and never is fully at center, you wont be able to control the chopper. Can make for some REAL scary moments.

I'm doing a hell of a lot better now after getting those two items working correctly. I'm actually dodging missiles with regularity. :woot: Although I did have my AI wingman run into me forcing me to crash into a mountain. Thats another 1st. :(

Registered for that last night, still am not able to get in on it, I'm 'In the moderation queue awaiting approval'. Fsckers.

Been playing BS though, and am learning what keys I want where. I skipped the ABRIS section of training for now, but will go back to it. I got through the intro, flight and combat sections though. This sim is wicked. I need to get used to the trim function. One tip I am seeing on the ED forums is to use the axis display, which can be activated with RCtrl+Enter.

Ordered up a web cam today for Free Track too, should be here Wednesday-ish. Gonna go by our mom and pop 'radio shack' for the LEDs tomorrow. I have a feeling its going to make a world of difference.

The flight model in this is awesome. I feel like I'm behind the stick of a real helo. I guess after LOMAC, ED decided to focus on study sims, and also get in to the military simulator market (eg, sims for armies to use), hence the ridiculous attention to detail. Got that start up sequence memorized yet LB? :D

Oh no.. No way am I going to learn the REAL startup sequence. Not yet anyway. Sorry if I wasnt clear on that. I just have a little take off check list. Master Arm - On, Laser - On, Moving tracker - On, Setting both flare launchers on, and setting the flares to launch 3 in a sequence. I dont wanna screw around with the flares. I want as many out there as possible! Like a damn 4th of July show every time an IR missile comes my way. I figure if I havent killed the threat before I run out of flares then Im doing something wrong in my target approaches. I'll let the ground crew worry about flares.

I went though the ARBIS tutorial once. Only thing I really need to know was how to put the moving map on the display. I'll figure out the rest later when I want to fine tune my map usage. Done really see the need though. :dunno:

Thats a good idea with the axis display Soupy. Might need to try that. You'll get the hang of the trim though. It isnt that bad to figure out.

My LED's might be coming in today. I sure hope so. I'll be away from my PC for a few days so I'd like to work on it while I have time. Might use my old Constructs toys to make a framework for it.

SimHQ has a really excellent article on different aspects of the Black Shark. It's written by an aeronautical engineer but he dumbs it down so things make a bit more sense. It's worth checking out.
