On my HTPC I will be in the middle of watching something and it goes BSOD on me. The BSOD goes too quick to get the info, but I was able to get 0x0000007e as one of the codes. This happens repeatedly. What can I do see the error in Vista64? Any ideas on fixing it short of purchasing and installing Win7.

Hope that helps, I haven't used it in a while.
PS the location of the files is
C:\Users\Gateway\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\W ER\ReportArchive\Report0624a3ac\Report.wer
my user name is Gateway, use the one in use during crash, but doh you can't read those files.
I should really have two cups of coffee before posting.

I had heard that a recent windows update was causing certain machines to BSOD.

There should also be a bios setting that should prevent your PC from booting after the BSOD so that you can read/record the information. At least there was on my old Asus mobo...

It's actually a Windows option. If you go to the System Properties window (right-click on My Computer, go to 'properties') then the 'advanced' tab, there should be a 'Settings' button under the 'Startup and Recovery' box. Click it, and in the next screen there should be a checkbox for 'Automatically restart' under the System Failure section. Uncheck the box, and 'OK' out of everything. I don't have a Vista machine in front of me right now, but I think it's virtually identical.
STOP 0x0000007E is one that can have a large amount of causes. It usually is software related, but it can be RAM. I would start by making sure that Vista and all drivers are up to date, and also running Memtest or a similar program. I would also do a chkdsk /f for good measure, in case you've got corrupt software somewhere.
There was indeed a Windows update that killed a few specific laptops a few weeks ago, but I'm not quite sure if any desktops were affected.

pull out some memory try again...
must be solar flares i have heard alot of computers dying of late, mine too, died, no sign of life.
stop errors are crapola too rarely useful info on them too unless it has a driver or file listed.
you could try to boot in alst known config, luckily as gruthar mentioned memtest vista has got a rebadged version built in recovery options on the CD... personally i use FOG now for imaging home pc's and diags since it is pxe boot..
but in the middle of somehting i would suspect memory first...

yeah, I hope not the memory. I just want to be able to boot up and get everything off of it. It seems to be getting worse though. Before I could go 10 mins or more without an error, this morning it happened every two minutes I was on :(

Was going to make a suggestion to test the RAM as well but it seems others have already done so.
Sorry that the PC gods are frowning on you this week Drayu. Hope you get up and going 100% soon.

yeah, no shit LB. IT does seem that way to me too! I will give it a whirl today while watching football. Good thing I haven't returned the cable companies DVR yet. And, I think the memory is Corsair which has a great warranty. Have to pull it out and see.

Does it still happen in safe mode?

I can no longer even boot the computer up. It is windows load and immediate BSOD. I will have to work on it later. But first I need to extract all my valuable files off the HD.

Sorry to hear that.
It is probably the ram or a combo of ram/mb/psu.
Have you tried booting to a live linux cd?
