Yep, been moving files over..... I think I like it.

That's really all I wanted to say.

Here's what I put in it, and it was around $420 total..

D-Link DNS-323 2 Bay SATA Network Storage Enclosure

2 x 1.5Tb Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3Gb/s 1.5-TB Hard Drive
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=511a8cf6a794b110VgnVCM100000f5 ee0a0aRCRD

Configured it as a 3Tb JBOD... would have liked to have bought a 4-bay NAS, but this is what I could afford right now, and I really needed one.

I'm happy with it so far, though it does run a little hot... I'll probably mod it to put in a better fan.

Woot!!

and I swear it has nothing to do with porn.. promise... or... perhaps I'm lying through my teeth..

Remember according to google's hard disk temperature study running them too cool causes them to fail earlier than a warm to hot running one. As long as they are not really hot then your good.

Google's temperature research found an equally surprising result: "Failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend," the authors of the study found.

it's freaking crazy that we all talk about building terrabyte anything, i remember when a 100mb hard drive cost the earth, i think i only just recently got rid of a 20mb MTM drive from the basement...

now newegg has a good deal for today only on 1.5 TB externals ( internal external no difference when it is cheap and i have a screwdriver *LOL*) and i am dead broke *LOL*

my main system has 2TB of storage made up of 3 300 and 2 400 and a 500 all JBOD i NEED to get my RAID 6 going ( or at least RAID 5 but my card does RAID 6 and i like redundancy) i have 8 400GB drives sitting waiting to finish my file server that i might turn into an ESX server and run some more VM's on (that way i can get rid of the current domain controller and other machines and condense them into one machine)
If i had the money i would buy me 6 1.5 TB drives and have done with storage for a while.

Either way i think it is very strange that we talk about hundreds of gigabytes of storage for PERSONAL use the way that corporations used to talk about it for their corporate use!

The only real issue then is how do we back all this crap up?!?! i mean a SDLT drive will set you back a few G's and the tapes are about $100 a pop for 3 TB you need at least 4
anything smaller the n800GB a tape is not worth it ( imagine using those small 4 GB DDS tapes *LOL*)
