More importantly, I got a pretty nice system as it is, little aged, and I'm only getting around 80 FPS.
However, someone I know said they had this:
DFI Lanparty SLi-DR
OCZ PC4000 VX
AMD X2 4400+ Toledo
WD Raptor 74 GB 10,000 RPM SATA
2 x eVGA 7800GTXs in SLi
And claimed a constant 300 FPS in CS:S w/ max settings.
:X Could this be the dream machine?

Seeing it is a pretty general question, I guess it would be kind of hard to Hijack... or maybe not...
Anyway, I am not going to start pulling numbers all around, but I will say this:
I run two machines at home for myself one is a 2.53Ghz P4 1gig ram and the other is a AMD2800 with 1 gig, the AMD runs faster and smoother... for ex. when bf2 starts up(both using a 5700 ultra Vid Card) the P4 skips pauses etc, where as the the athlon processor runs it as smooth as can be, I myself was always a follower of pentiums, but since getting my first athlon, my views have completely changed, I personally would take an amd over a p4, where a year ago it was the opposite

Can't say I have firsthand experience in comparing high-end P4 and AMD chips. However, all the benchmarks (forgive me if I'm out of date) I've seen show that AMD is slightly ahead with their latest generation chips. They're generally cheaper, run cooler (unusual for AMD), are more power efficient, and perform faster with more mainstream programs. Intel still does better running multiple and multi-threaded applications. But I'll quit yapping and post THG's articles on their stress-test. Second link is more in-depth.

I second gruthars post. Everything I've heard about AMD is that it is faster and therefore more efficent BUT more unstable than P4. I have heard, AMD are supposedly more suseptable to crashing and other related issues when running multiple applications especially.
