fansub is when people take the original material, translates it and subtitles it with their translation.

usually cuts down the transfer time from JP to NA by about, oh, allot.
most fansub groups that are pretty quick, can bring a release from Japan to America in about 10 hours, unlike companies like funimation and others take about a year to bring it over, if they deem that it's a good idea.
