Man, either Joaquin has gone completely off the deep end or he's putting on one hell of an act to fool the entire world. Either way, this interview is hard to watch cause Joaquin is so uncomfortable to look at and listen to, but Dave rips on him good a couple times, especially towards the end.
PS. I wonder what Joaquin says to him when he gets up and takes his glasses off at the end..?

Why would you do that intentionally at the peak of your career? I think he has mental problems. This is like what Tom Cruise did for a while last year when his handlers lost control of him. Only this is much more extreme. I believe that fame and fortune like those guys have obtained has a profound effect on you. Just imagine the pressure that comes from family, friends, fans, etc. Sooner or later they just crack. So then you ask yourself why would his handlers let him go on Letterman show like that, easy, contractual obligation with the film studio to promote the movie. Even bad publicity is good. Favos' comment about the movie is proof of that.

Not so much an act... A lot of drugs...
I think Snake is right on this one. I however believe it is not just the stress but also the significant amount of power celebrities get as a result of their money and fame. Eventually they start thinking crazy like they can do whatever they want and no one will question it because they are "the famous so and so!!"

After some googling, I read on a couple of sites/blogs that Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck are making a mockumentary that follows Joaquin during his rough transition from acting to hiphop (poking fun at all the actor/musicians that are in it for the marketability). If this is true, it was a convincing act on Letterman. I'd guess Letterman didn't know about it.

I know that Casey is following him around filming his transition, and the only reasonable explanation seems like it would be because it's a big charade. So, vic, you've probably got it about right

the john lenon hig has a kite interview thing was pathetic when john lenon did it, and really has not gotten any smarter, other then to infer to kids who can freely watch this in the internets that drugs are acceptable and possibly cool, which we all know that they are not.
and neither is growing a beard that you can strain krill out of and wearing shades indoors without having a medical complaint...
it is amazing how fame gets to people, i think there should be a "fame test" or "fame school" (no not that horrible horrible 80's show) where people learn to deal with the stress like the marine corp. only more pussified... rather like finishing school, if you fail, you cannot be famous...

It makes since to me that it's a hoax too. After all he is a great actor.
