i've only owned the zune, so i can only tell you that side....... i can do games, mp3, videos, podcast (my fav) on it..... there was that stupid leap year problem earlier this year, but that's over now.. the unit has great battery life. i just wish the unit would play avi/mkv files

I loved my Zune, (yes, I used past tense because I freaked when my Zune locked up and tried opening it to disconnect the battery RIP, we barely knew ye!) I could put music and videos on it and take it wherever I wanted. Two issues though:
1) The software does not work on the 64-bit version of XP.
2) The first generation Zune has a bug so that every 4 years on New Year's eve, it will lock up. The solution is to not turn it on until New Year's Day.

It's hard to say; they both require proprietary software and lack support for a lot of audio formats. I like the Zune better only because it has an EQ. Other than that, they're both VERY similar.
There are better name-brand players out there that sound better, support countless additional audio formats, do not require proprietary software, and cost less. Check out the Sandisk Sansa Clip/Fuze, Sony Walkmans, Cowon/iAudio i7, and Cowon D2 (absolute best, IMO).

i hate the ipod, not because it has a slick user interface, not because it is a nice size, but because of it;s software and want to propieterise everything, i cannot image zune is much better considering M$ are as bad as apple, i bought an 8 gig "mp3" player from walmart last year, it is great, okay, it does not play videos and all that other stuff, but it play music for what seems like centuries, and coz it was cheap it has a radio and a microphone in it too... not bad for under $50
for all other stuff i have my psp, great games okay battery life (3+ hours of movie or game depending on UMD or memorycard) a working browser, watch any videos i wish to convert (or buy) and an awesome screen, with a 8 gig memory card i can fit hours of fun, (i also use my blackberry as a media player, recently i found my Sony minidisc walkman in the car (with discs) and plugged it up hell that works great too... got some oldschool compilations i had too..
no all in all anything but.... springs to mind, though if it were a life/death desicion i would go for Zune

i mostly hate apple because stuck up douches have to have their products and how it so clean and smug with itself, but what im looking for here is a opinion. im in need of one because of my friends saying "huh-huh alex got a zune it cant even download apps" and i want to punch them all in the face, and for those who like apple, you are all deemed non-worthy of looking at microsoft and all its greatness

nsane, you should try to send it back anyway, it's not your fault that MS released a buggy product
explain to them that you had the leap year bug and was following the direction on the forum on how to disconnect the battery, yadda yadda yadda.....

I have 2 zunes and a sansa. I also have advance wma workshop to convert all types of audio files to my liking. I've not had the leap year bug since mine are the 80 gb model. They recommend the newer 120 gb models. Good luck in your decision.

I am so with you there... I'm stuck between wanting an ipod and yet hate the ipod all at the same time because of the douche bag mentality that seems to go along with Apple products...
And my opinion is that most of the people that complain about the Zune are only complaining because it's not an Ipod... if it had that flashy little Apple logo on it I'm sure they would be singing it's praises.... morons.

i know i am being dumb here, but why would you want to download apps on a music player? i use music players, well for music, i do not need tetris, or randomise shaky ipod look like you are tossing off app, or really anything else, just music, i listen to music when i am occupied, therefore do not need to play with my gadget while i am listening... if i wanna download apps, i use my laptop, maybe i am an old fashioned person, who grew up with the origional walkman, meh

@sirdig. I have an iPhone. I don't really care about anyone's douchebag attitudes. I only care that I have a gadget that does what I want. Anyways, I download apps onto my iPhone bc it allows me to do what I normally would need to be sitting in front of a computer to do.
For example, I have an Maps app that tells me where I am currently. It also allows me to search Google for a place and route me to it while showing me traffic conditions. I have another app that will hook up to the GPS in my phone and show me everything around me like bars, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, theaters, etc. Another app will show me the movies playing and allow me to check their times at the theathers around me. Yet another app allows me to access Facebook on the go. Another one lets me view and upload pics to Flickr. Another one lets me look at restaurants and reviews on Yelp. Track flights, check all my email accounts, surf the web, read online books, listen to radio, police scanners, weather radar, identify songs I heard in the car, at the mall, etc...
There are lots of apps to do what I need. I haven't really sit down at my computer since I got my iPhone.

i have a blackberry and with remote apps i do not need to be at my computer for my most common tasks, however thats my blackberry, i can play music and vids on that too, though the PSP is way better for vids. my music player does what it says on the tin, plays music, i do not need my music player to play games, surf the web, give fallatio (well maybe :D) i use it when i am driving or cycling or doing something that does not involve playing with it... i think thats the comparison here
look at this from another point of view, we have tools that help us do our jobs, however most people with music players do not need them to do anything but play music, so throwing the apps thing in there as a reason why it is so good is not really a valid point..
honestly what draws me to a player these days is the ability to render 24 bit lossless files,
