View Full Version : Well kids.. today I applied to join the Navy.

So yes.. for those of you who have heard me mentioning this idea passively in teamspeak, I finally did it.

I had talked to a Medical Officer recruiter last summer, and got some details about the Medical Service Corps since I have already started a career in health care.

Basically, I'm 30, have two college degrees, professional certification, and nothing but my apartment and car. I have no pets, no wife, no kids... only dead or dying plants. So I figure, why the hell not? Why not pony up and put in my service to my country? It's either that, or sit here on the couch, doing the same thing I do everyday- try to take over the world. Okokokok.. I had to say that.

But anyway, I've applied to enter the Navy Medical Service Corps as a Medical Technologist. If approved, I'll start as an officer, and commence training at Officer Development School before being placed at one of the large naval hospitals.

At this time, my application is in. I just have to clear MEPS, my background check (maybe I shouldn't have listed IB, FozzyBear, and LordALF as references...), and an interview at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

Why the heck am I telling you guys?

Because as part of the Medical Service Corps, I won't be flying any planes, or commanding troops.

So I thought it might make you all sleep better knowing that there won't be any airstrikes dropped on friendly troops because of me :) :woot:

That's the way to go. Go in as an officer in the Medical Corps and just stay in until you retire. Do a good job and you are looking at least O4 or O5 rank.

Good, with that kind of posting you won't be calling in airstrikes. =P

On a serious note, if you do get in, good luck and I hope you enjoy it, because that is quite the commitment. I'm glad people out there have the courage I don't.

It's still pretty nice, spent a few nights there when I got pneumonia in boot camp back in december 2002. And I don't know if it was just the fact that I had been around 100's of guys for the few months before I was there, but there were a lot of hot female doctors.

Sorry to go off topic, but good luck dude.

exactly... the team of doctors working on me were all females, none were unattractive. the 03, working on me most, was a cheerleader turned naval md. i was in the hospital on new years eve and she visited me in her going out duds. i hope she didnt notice my tent.

is the mcdonalds still down in the courtyard?

sorry to go off topic too. but there is a lesson antigen... try to get stationed at the balboa complex. lots of chicks and they were all hot. one of my doctors was a scandinavian chick, complete with blonde hair, accent and long legs... besides all of that my care there was very good, except for the torture at physical therapy and the " tough it out, you dont need pain medicine" mentality while they were peeling my skin off. i have a special hate for the PT team and their attitudes. very poor pain management/ patient care in PT.

ok, sorry off topic. im excited for you. if i had a phd i would have already gone back. i tried after i got masters, but they would only waive my age and medical issues for phd.

Wibby
01-27-2009, 11:59 AM
Yeah there was still a McDonald's down there when I was there, I remember that because all of us pneumonia babies (as we were called back on MCRD) and there were about 100 of us including a Drill Instructor, had our own wing and some of the recruits who had family nearby who came to visit them got McDonald's.

Papa, did you suffer burns?

auto immune deficiency disease that was misdiagnosed and untreated for months (because all sick call doctors are rejects) required my skin be removed and regrown from the waste up. the routine was the same as burn patients and most of the friends i made there were burn patients.

antigen, if you make it in... and you become a sick call doctor.... the military is trying to tell you something.

wib - i remember the mcdonalds vividly because i was on a very controlled diet while i was there, it was only after 1.5 months i was allowed to eat anything normal. so my first non-hospital food was a mcchicken value meal. i wound up puking for most of the night after that, i am guessing i wasnt ready or the massive fat and grease intake after hospital food. dunno, but the pretty cheerleader nurse had to come in at 3am and stick a suppository up my ass.... lol... i got fingered by my hot doctor... are we way off topic yet??

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

The online security questionnaire is a pain in the butt, and as a current state employee, I'm well versed in the fine art of asinine bureaucracy.

I won't be a medic though, that's for the enlisted ranks... and there is no way I could ever do better than my bad-ass medic skills in BF2. Though I might use this experience as a place to start towards a Physician Assistant or ARNP masters degree.

Who knows... I'll keep you all updated on the process, and we'll see if I can give MEPS all the right answers.

I don't even think they let people in the Medical Service Corps have guns to tell you the truth.. though my recruiter, who is an RN, does have a Pistol Marksmanship ribbon... so at least we know she can shoot.

(and whoever was talking about SanDiego... holy hell.. I just might have to try to get stationed there!!! though Japan is always an option, considering I have quite a bit of experience living in Japan)

Dude just to let you know MEPS is a joke, all it is is getting up and on the bus to go to the station at like 5, sitting out in the cold (this was in Denver) for about 45 minutes, then sitting around, getting my blood drawn, pissing in a cup while someone watches me, waiting around, doing a vision test to check for color blindness (I am), waiting around, walking like a duck, waiting around, some doctor telling me to drop trow bend over and spread em because a simple turn and cough just doesn't cut it in the military, and did I mention waiting around? And that was just the first one, times that by two and it will just be the most fun time of your life. I'm sure going into Officer MEPS might be a little different than what I went through but I don't think it will be too much different. But have fun with it.

Here's an update for all you interested parties:

I went to MEPS today... 5 in the morning to be exact. What a way to spend a monday morning eh? And what an interesting introduction to the military it was.

To be honest, I was more curious about the kids that were there processing and being shipped out to boot camp on the same day. I kind of had it easy to tell you the truth... no ASVAB, no sitting down to see what job I would qualify for, no reciting an oath, and no free lunch while waiting to go to boot camp.

So anyway, I took all the tests, got blood taken, peed in a cup, talked to a doctor that was older than dirt and shaking like Michael J. Fox (ok.. that was mean.. but still, I thought I was going to lose an eardrum when he was checking my ears with that damn probe), did the duck walk, walked on my knees, etc.

However, I was disqualified due to some rather wild times my first year in college that I wasn't going to lie about. My recruiter said that would definitely happen, and she already has the waiver forms filled out. So I guess I'm waiting on a waiver.

Fun.

If all that stuff goes through, then it looks like I'll be reporting for navy boot camp on my 31st birthday. Think they'll bake me a cake?

you did better than me. i lied at meps about my prior indescretions.... then they put me thru a "nice" interrogation "because there was no way i came from my county and havent smoked pot when my county was a leading pot producer in the nation".. he was right but i stuck to my guns and got the clearance i needed for my mos.

good luck. navy boot camp is only 8 weeks (if it hasnt changed). it will be over by time you get there.

Well kids.. here's your update.

Last friday, I got the phone call I have been waiting for.

I was approved by the Commissioning Board and recommended for Commissioning as a Naval Officer in the Medical Service Corps. I'm currently awaiting final selection, but that basically means that I raise my hand to take the oath on Oct. 1, go off to ODS on Oct. 6th, and who knows where I'll be sent (though for a first tour, that means San Diego, CA, Portsmouth, VA, or Bethesda, MD).

I'm excited, overwhelmed, apprehensive, scared, happy, sad, stoked, and bewildered all at the same time.

Wish me luck!

(looking back.. I never told you all how horrible my interview was.. they freaking raked me over the coals.. but I guess I handled it well, because I got an awesome review and, well, here I am.)

Greetings and Salutations WiH'ers!!

Today I accepted my commission in the US Navy and took my oath at NRD Seattle. LTJG =antigen= ... fancy eh?

Jan. 3rd I'm off to ODS (formerly known as OIS) which is kind of like OCS-lite. 5 weeks of rolling around in sand while getting yelled at by Marine Drill Sergeants... ahhhh... sounds great.

I have a hot copy of my orders in hand, and once ODS is done, I'm off to Naval Medical Center San Diego. WOOT!! Finally, I can get a TAN!!
