I been having this prob for a few years....when I reboot, get this...

http://www.atomicbobs.com/uploads/desktop.jpg

NOt sure what it is, says "system32" and opens this folder on reboot.

Every time. And I have to close this window on every restart.

It used to do it on my old compaq, and then when I did some file transfer to my new Dell, this bug came over with it.

What is this and how do I make it go away?

I know.....I'm a tard.

Admin, I know you don't like pics this wide, but smaller I couldn't read it....

Please deal with it for this thread.

Thx.

I'll chck when I get back home and let you know. I know there is a lot of stuff happening during start-up. Probably needs cleaned up.

It sounds like you have a browser/system hijacker that was on your old computer and came over when you transferred the files. In any case, the system32 is a folder/directory that is critical to windows. If it gets screwed, chances are that you will have to reformat/reinstall.

What I would do if I were in your shoes:

Check your startup programs like bonez says, if there is nothing there, run a spyware/adware checker (i would run both spybot and adaware with all options turned on personally), then (if items are found and removed) restart your computer

If that doesn't change anything, do the following:

-click start

-click run

-type "msconfig"

-click the "startup" tab

- these are all the little applications that load when windows actually
starts up. here you can disable the backround programs that run
(you usually see their icons down in the task bar..by the time),
such as ati's clie.exe (ati control center), quicktime's task bar item
(qttask.exe), even antivirus/spyware programs. The key is to look at
the directory and file that the program points to so you can get an
idea of exactly what you'll be changing

-look for an entry that may be blank and pointing to the system32 folder with no specific file attached (i think there is one called /l: eng that gives you this specific problem).

-if there is an entry like that, uncheck it (in fact, if there are any
programs that you rarely use, uncheck them. the only thing I would
leave checked are firewall, antivirus, spyware, and perhaps printer
software. the additional stuff eats up memory quick)

Well......."Start" Programs , start up" only has 4 things and they look normal to my nubish eye. Two HP things for the printer, a MS Office and something called digital line detector.

I ran hijack this and it was far too scary, since it had dozens of things I could delete and I don't know what any of them are. Too risky for me. :yuck:

I ran the msconfig thing thought and had some McAfee stuff running (from the old old days before I had Norton, which is also running. I disabled those. And that stupid "seeve.exe" thing that gives me pop ups. That was good to find. But there was one line that said this...

Start up item cdaengine0400 RUNDLL32.EXE wildtangent yada yada

I have to get that uot of there, but will have to do it later.

I rebooted and the system32 window still opens.

Hmm... can try booting Windows in safe mode to see if it does it then. If it doesn't pop up then, then it is indeed due to a program loading at start up.

Rundll32.exe itself is benign... it's a part of Windows, though spy/ad/malware programs do use it. If it's running, I'd be on the look out for those types of programs, though rundll32 will continue to run even when they're gone.
