View Full Version : Strange connection problems

Ok.. recently I've been experiencing connection problems to the server that fade in and out. Sometimes I'm able to stay connected, and sometimes not. Sometimes it happens when I'm in the game.. and others it happens right when I try to join the server. I also have the basic symptoms of the memory leak (the game just exits after a long time of playing). Because of this, I have been trying to catch any error messages that may pop up by running the game in windowed mode.
Well.. there aren't any error messages that pop up when the memory leak fills up my RAM.. but running in windowed mode proved a bit useful.. because when I started getting the connection problems, I was able to alt+tab out of the window quickly.. and run traceroute on the server.
Here's my results:

Any ideas how to sidestep that timed out connection... if it is indeed the problem?
Would a manual release/renew of my IP do anything?
EDIT: Ok... the IP renewing doesn't seem to be working.. probably since the second hop is the broken link, and whatever that one's IP is.. I'm guessing it's in the same subnet as the IP's I'm getting.
What's really strange to me though is that the same computer is listed twice... how weird is that?

that's your firewall.

It's not just the firewall but more importantly the gateway. I'm getting the exact same thing and I'm wondering if something that BF2 is sending out is causing a collision or something and dropping the connection.
I'm using a crappy Linksys wireless 5 port router and when I dropped I did the same test. Also, interestingly whenever that drops the link LED shows a lock for about 15 seconds when I drop.
Since I'm running a server on another machine I've got all ingoing/outgoing ports for BF2 open atm.

I haven't had any connection issues at all, although I have heard some guys in TS saying they get disconnected. But for me it had been fine, so it probably isn't a universal problem.

ok to explain it(simple as possible)....
1st hop, your computer(no place like, 127.0.0.1)
2ond hop, router/gateway/firewall.
3rd hop, local AP
4th - 6th(or so) hop, internal ISP routing.
everything else is external.

Almost :)
1. localhost
2. router/gateway/firewall INTERNAL (typically 192.168.*.*'ish)
3. router/gateway/firewall EXTERNAL (assigned by ISP but possessed by the router)
4. ISP and onward!

4. ISP and onward!my 3rd hop doesn't show my router/modem ip, but the # of my nearest AP.
check your ip then do a trace to get your third hop and see if they match(it's not likely they will because most vpn endpoints stealth your ip)
and the First ip is your gateway, second is your firewall/vpn, then to AP. got them a little mixed when i looked at the dlink default internal ip.

Ok... so I added some firewall rules to my router for all of the ports that BF2 uses.. and that seems to have cleared up the connection problems in game.
However, now I'm only getting "Network Data Corruption Errors" right before the screen with the Join button. It's really irritating having to wait a really long time to load (my computer has 512 RAM), and then right when it's about to finish, it crashes back to the server screen with the network data corruption message.
Anyone know a fix for this, or is it just my connection?
I can get anywhere from 30-100 ping on the server at times (for some reason pings from the in game server browser are much higher than in game, or those I can get from looking in Xfire).. but when I'm actually connected it stays around 30-40 most of the time.
I disable my zonealarm firewall whenever I'm playing, so the only firewall that I can't (and probably shouldn't) disable is the one on my router. Perhaps there is some sort of packet dropping going on when it happens?

Regardless of minor discussions about what hop is what (It'll depend on your router and how it reports back to a tracert to begin with... whateva) your hardware (router) firewall should make no difference unless you are running a server. If you are running a server you need to forward all relevant ports (there are a ton of them and you can get em off the ea website) to accept incoming connections. NAT firewall (from your router) issues should not affect your client connecting to other servers though.
Zone alarm should prompt you whenever the browser or the game client attempt to reach out to the internet... or whenever you login. If you alt+tab out and accept the prompt and tell it to always allow BF2 to access the internet you should have no problems running a software firewall while you play.
