My parents decided to go with some horrible dial up service, I can only connect at 24k. I tried to get on teamspeak, but nobody seems to be able to hear me, but I can hear them. And I am not even going to try CSS.

They are never going to get anything higher than dial up?

We will eventually get satellite internet, but our local satellite provider won't have the neccessary equipment for a few weeks, so I am stuck with this untill then.

Oh and by the way, it seems that the reason nobody could hear me on teamspeak, was because I had the mic plugged into the wrong jack, silly me :jester: , so atleast I can get on TS.

One thing that is pissing me off, is that steam seems to think that CSS is not installed on my system, even though I have done absolutely nothing to it for days now. When I attempt to start it, it tells me that it needs to be installed and thta the necessary components will be downloaded from steam servers, with my speed, no thankyou. Maybe when I moved my computer to my new house, I shook the files off my hard drive :dunno: :jester: .

Just so you know. You WILL NOT be able to play online games with a satellite connection.

I was stuck on Dial-up for years.... damn 26.4 connection :upyours:

I bit the bullet and got ISDN. Not as good a DSL or Cable, but leaps and bounds better than dial-up. It is pretty expensive though. A little over $60 for the ISDN line and $10 for an ISP = $70/month. I don't know how expensive satellite is, but I know it has several issues of its own.

Check out www.dslreports.com or www.broadbandreports.com (They are the exact same place, just one is the old name) and Research satellite and ISDN before your parents go and spend a lot of $$$$$$

i had satelite for a while b4 cable. its not too bad, but sometimes it just drops the connection for no reason and you can't do anything to fix it. its still better than dial up tho.

I wish I could get some kind land line, but my parents don't want to pay for an ISDN line, so that leaves Satellite as my only choice.

The service we are going to get seems pretty good, 1mbps connection speed, I am looking forward to it, thats for sure.

Oh man... I have had my fair share of dial-up and absolutly hated it. That's what I started out on. We have DSL right now, but after a year my dad says we're gonna switch to cable...

Now my only question/concern about that is...can you play games with that? I mean, I know it's faster, but I always heard that DSL is good for gaming...if we do get cable after the years up, will I still be able to play CS and BF2 without problems with low fps and/or lagging?

So to sum all that up...which is better for gaming: DSL or Cable??

I have had cable for 5 years, never ever ever had a problem with gaming. The way cable works is everyone who has cable around your neighborhood works off that bandwith. Even in populated cities where I've lived ( Washington D.C., Tampa) Ive never had a problem with any bandwith loss even during peak hours.

im on 56k until auguast 29th and damn is it sweet....no not really, but i find i can play cs for awhile with a ping of about 240-300 which isnt all that bad. sure it tends to lower my effectiveness a bunch. but i can still pull off a positive score....though a low one...on most maps i play at. thanks pump shotty
