View Full Version : Oilfield lag

One other odd thing that I've noticed is that I lag REALLY badly (the laging when you look around, not server lag) but ONLY on the 'Daqing Oilfields' map. I get killed a lot on this map because I can't turn when enemies are on the screen. But all of the other maps are fine.

The server actually crashed and dumped everyone on it last night playing this map. It was neat because I was in a tank and became stuck (loss of connection) but a jeep floated slowly over the top of my tank and up into the sky.

I had heard that if you're playing a map and then the server crashed on that map. The next time you play it, it's laggy for whatever reason. :dunno:

But looking around lag is usually video lag.

I was playing last night with you Dark...

It seems this map is having problems with video lag but the reason why escapes me. I've done some video testing outside of the game with a few of the maps and I get around 50 to 65 fps no matter the map...but when I'm online it seems to frame jump (or rubber band if you like that term better)

Now I find that od since the map is generated localy and not served up by the server so IP connections shouldn't affect anything. All I can imagine is the database/code fopr this map is differn't for this map.

A good test I might try tonight would be to moniter my CPU usage and Video ram usage during online play tonight to see what the differnce is between this map and the others...

i say it has to do with the massive amount of objects(and the Massive objects themselves)

there are 4 massive oil storage tanks, plus hundreds of buildings ranging from small to huge. and each one of them takes up an amount of ram releative to their size.

so yea, the maps gonna lag like mad if you have geo turned up all the way.

One thing I have noticed is that in single player mode, this map is ok. At least for me. I will try turning down the geometry and see if that helps. I have an OC'd 6800 and 1.5 gigs of ram, so my machine ought to be able to handle it but I will do some more experimenting. I have a football game tonight so might not get to test it until tomorrow.

I think that the lag on this map is mostly due to server side issues for whatever reason.

My rig is pretty nice and I come now where near having issues on any other map but this one... and my FPS don't seem to drop so much as I just kinda start teleporting around. Since there are no problems rendering and such and positioning is what seems to be off the most... this would seem to me like the server is unable to keep up with the changing locations of objects and all that.

The oil tanks shouldn't add any more lag... it's just one texture repeating itself over a large terrain feature framework.

Just my two cents.

I wouldn't doubt that it's a server side issue. It's possible that for whatever reason the server processing this map is not efficient enough.

Monos,
What settings are you using in-game? What kind of video card do you have?

I'm on an X600 256MB everything on medium accept anti-aliassing which is off and I'm running at 1024/768

I need AA on atleast 2x ..it cleans up that nasty stair step effect :yuck:

Also, yesterday was my first time I had a lag problem(wasn't just in WiH) I would have ping of 39 then jump to 900+....terrible..I noticed that it would lag when I kill/heal/repair(basically any points) someone/something l :dunno:

That map kills me as well, and its really only that map. The lagging I get is from the HDD being accessed. I have an Athlon 64 2800, gig of ram and a 6600GT.... most settings on medium except for terrain and effects and dynamic lighting and shadows on low. The "lagging" happens occassionally on other maps but is only a problem (and very persistant) on the oil fields map. I tend to just leave and not play that map now. It kinda sucks cause its so hard to get back onto the server since it's always full.

OK. I got home too late last night to do anything but messed around with it this morning a lot. Joined servers, changed settings, created my own server etc. The "lag" I'm seeing isn't too bad until more than 32 players are on a server, but strangely enough, I solved the problem by setting the textures to medium. Everything is high except for that and lighting, which are both medium. Now the oilfields do not lag at all. I'm betting that it's because I only have 128 megs of ram on my 6800...Who knows? At least it works now.

Monos I dont lag on this map either. But I play the game like you do, likely in 800x600 with a shitty GE 5500 256 megabyte. I dont care though. I think the game still looks great in 800 x 600 and gameplay for me is everything. As long as it runs flawlesly I dont care.

The map came up again this mornoing, and with the settings I posted above, worked fine with a full 64 players. So it must be something funky with that map and textures. So if anyone else is having the problem just try fiddling with your texture settings.

"CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS TO WHAT YOU LIKE, HIGH OR WHATEVER.
NOW,DO NOT DO ANYTHING BUT EXIT THE GAME,
IN MY COMPUTER GO TO: mydocuments/battlefield2/mods/BF2/Cache
open the folder with the long stringy name and delete everything YES EVERYTHING in that folder.
now load your game and choose a map, the first time it will take extra slow to load but your performance should be better."

I found this...I did this...and I'm really happy I did!

 I had really bad video lag but this cleans it up alot...try it...

Edit: I noticed this suggestion was already post in the "Tweak it" section on this forum...sry
