From CNN:

"Olympic Girl Seen, But Not Heard"

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/08/12/oly.kids/index.html

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A little girl and her song captivated millions of viewers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But what they saw was not what they heard.

Yang Peiyi's voice was heard during Friday's opening ceremony, but her face was never seen.

Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all.

Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough.

"The reason was for the national interest," said Chen Qigang, the ceremony's musical director, in a state radio interview. "The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression. ... Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects."

The decision was made at the highest levels, Chen said.

"We had to do it," he said. "We'd been through several inspections. They're all very strict. When we rehearsed at the spot, there were several spectators from various divisions, especially leaders from the Politburo, who gave the opinion it must change."

Few who watched the Olympic ceremony realized the deception. "Tiny singer wins heart of nation," read the headline in Tuesday's China Daily newspaper.

"Lin Miaoke might be only 9 years old but she is well on her way to becoming a star, thanks to her heartwarming performance," the article gushed -- without mentioning she never sang a note.

But as word has gotten out on the Internet, some Chinese bloggers are outraged.

"If you're not good-looking, no matter how well you sing, you'll not be onstage. Do you know you're twisting a whole generation?" read one comment.

Another said, "If foreigners found out, they'd think we can't even find a girl who is good at both."

As for Yang Peiyi, she's been quoted as saying she was honored to have had a role in the opening ceremony, even though few realized just how big her part really was.

The girl who lip-synched:

The girl who really sang the song, deemed 'not cute enough':

In my opinion, the girl who really sang is cuter. She seems more real, more heartful (if that's even a word... they use it in Japan a lot :P), and more convincing. The chosen girl seems, well, fake. Another over-the-top girl, used as a posterchild for what is, in reality, an unattainable vision of perfection.

Nope.

The top one will be Milli, the bottom one, Vanilli.

And they will work at a proprietary lead paint company as suppliers to Fisher Price.

Who has been listening to the rumors about their gymnastics team and how old they may be?

I'm pretty sure the pregame singers at the Super Bowl usually aren't singing live either. Much ado about nothing, IMO.

Yes, but China is going to these great lengths to mask or distract from it's deplorable human rights record among other things whereas our biggest problem is using too much ProTools for an artist to reproduce a song live without a back track.

This scandal isn't going to be as big as the one in the women's gymnastics competition if the Olympic committee ever proves that the girls on the China team are under the age of 16. There has been a lot of speculation about this because the girls just don't look 16 at all. But their Chinese papers say they are. And since there is no way to prove they aren't because the Chinese government won't disclose any more information about the girls "to protect their identity" the Olympic's committee can't pursue it any further. Though all it takes is a mess up down the road by China with these girls and they could have their medal revoked.

It's a huge potential scandal just waiting to happen. Mostly because the Chinese women's gymnastics team won the Gold over the USA by a mere 2 points.

I am not trying to take anything away from the opening ceremony. That was one of the best performances I have seen in a while. (I just wanted elements portrayed as live to be exposed as Bull Shiet)

If you watched the opening ceremonies, it was totally AMAZING!!!!! They didn't need to do anything dishonest.............
