So an Anantech Article (http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=453) released some info on the Nvidia Share Holders letter that was sent out in the last few days. There was interesting info mentioned in the letter that gave us a clue as to the power or possible strengths of the new GPU chip. This is complete speculation based solely on the number of transistors on the chip compared to the current G92 and the former G80.

GPU Chip - Number of Transistors
G80 - 681 million
G92 - 754 million
G100 - 1.2 billion

The little I could find on possible G100 details. They weren't too far off on the estimation of transistors.

NVIDIA G100 (NV60) DATA:

Unlike G90 that is based on the same architecture as the G80 aka NV50,the nVIDIA G100 (NV60) will be a totally new architecture and support Shader Model 5.0.The nVIDIA G100 will be based on TSMC 45nm process and will amount to more than 1.5 billion transistors .The nVIDIA G100 will support the nVIDIA CUDA 2 technology and will have much more computational power than the NV50(aka G80/G90) architecture..Marketing name for the G100 is said to be "GeForce X1800 GTX"...G100 will have almost 2 Teraflops of shader processing power..

sounds interesting, but, as intel proved just having a truck load of transistors does not make it really cool *cough cough netburst cough* but this does sound promising, and expensive..... and i guarantee that there will be a game released in under 3 months that will bring this to it's knees

Well well. That GeForce 280 GTX card is looking more and more promising. If I read those numbers right the 280 GTX card will be about the same performance wise as the 9800 GX2 without even knowing the GPU specs directly. Just looking at Memory size, bit rate and stream processors. Keep in mind that the 9800 GX2 is two modified G92/G94 chips put together using the same PCI-E slot. So it's technically two GPUs SLI together on one unit. Certainly gives you an idea of how much better the 280 GTX is going to be as a single GPU card. And we don't even know the Core, Shader or Memory clock speeds yet. Also since it's a smaller architecture it should also be less hot.

9800 GX2:
Core Clock (MHz): 600 MHz
Shader Clock (MHz): 1500 MHz
Memory Clock (MHz): 1000 MHz
256 Stream Processors
Memory Amount: 1G
Memory Interface: 512-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec): 128

280 GTX
240 Stream Processors
Memory Amount: 1G
Memory Interface: 512-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec): 128

Wow things are looking up. They also had the 260 GTX listed there. With those specs it easily out classes the 9800 GTX. We haven't even see their Ultra version yet which will be even more than the 280 GTX for probably the $600 mark. I really hope the 280 GTX is around the $300.

I guess we won't know more till later when we get closer to the Aug 2008 release.

Good scores when compared to the 9800GTX and even decent improvement on the 9800 GX2. Considering it's a single GPU card that's not bad going up against a dual card. The SLI configuration is even more impressive. I think VR-Zone may be down playing it a bit more than they need to. So far the 260 and 280 GTX cards are delivering decent improvements. As long as they don't cost more than the current 9800GTX I believe they will sell like hot cakes. However if they are priced higher you may have slow sales on them. Now I'm wondering what the 280 GTX will be like when OCed by the likes of Xbit/Anandtech/Tom's HD/OCers crews and when they tweak the drivers for it a bit more to make them more efficient.

staying behind the times, i think the prices of the 8800gt's will drop alot so i can buy one more for SLi if i need to, i know performance is not amazing like that but it will be cheaper then a new mobo/gfx combo for now.

one thing i am hoping is not for more power though, i want more efficiency, like intel did with the core2 lineup, where it does more and better but takes alot less power, i really do not want to spend 200 on a new psu that can handle 1000 watts when i should be getting the performance from the cpu/gpu on a 500w psu....

thats just my thought though, at the moment i have a 500w and 300w psus on my system ( 300w does the hd's burner and lights/fans) and i have a core 2 with an 8800gt, i am close to needing a bigger psu (though it did run a pD and 2 7900gs before)

the thing already heats the room up considerably ( think 700W heater basically) so my push is for more efficient cards not just raw power, anyone can ram 2 v12 engines in a tube frame and have a fucking fast vehicle, it is when you get the same performance from a I4 you look really good!

Another in depth article on the new graphics card.

Supposedly it's 236W TDP, though it has a couple of different modes of operation to reduce consumption. The articles make it sound like the power reduction stuff only works in Vista... hopefully that's not true.
