Ok, so I am going to be building another PC for my father since he is using a dinosaur at his house and he uses it for work all the time. I have picked out pretty much all of the easy things and really only need two things. I need a good motherboard and cpu (whether a combo or not) that will last him for AT LEAST 5 years. The only things that I need these two things to have are the following:

1) On board video for the mobo
2) Minimum of 2.0GHz for the processor
3) The mother board must be able to handle ddr2 800 ram
4) At least one UltraATA port and several (3 or more) SATA ports

Here are the things I have put together so far for his build and I would like to know your input on them. Please let me know if I should go in a different direction with anythign here. By the way, I already have a case so that is not a problem.

EVGA Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16813188023

Intel CPU: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16819115030

Thermaltake Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16817153023 (Is this too much for the setup? I need quality so I figured this was good)

Corsair Ram: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16820145034 (only when it has a crazy mail in rebate again)

WD HDD: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16822135106

Samsung DVD-R drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16827151153 (This can be any brand, whatever is cheapest)

So that is the build I am thinking of now. However, some say that Mobo can't handle ddr2 800 memory while others say it can. So I am a little questionable there. I am not looking to spend a bunch on this build, but I don't want him going and buying a $700 Dell with a bunch of crap he won't ever use when I can build him a better machine for half the price. I know this will only be my second build, but my first one was a blast to do (minus all the fried mobo's, lol) so I want to try another! Thanks in advance guys!

One last thing, I will be doing NO overclocking.

get a p35 chip set. the can take almost anything. hold off for a month or 2 tell the q6600 goes down a little more and get one. or go to a micro center and get a q6600. a q6600 should be good for a long time.

Looks like a good basic build.
Yes you could put "tons o stuff" in it.
But you're just after a basic build.

Here is a little better but about the same MB

I would urge you to spend an extra $7 and double the size of the HD

Everything else looks solid.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will go with the mobo justme suggested and most likely will get the bigger hard drive too. Since he doesn't need it right away, I might get the q6600 in a few monthes and just give him my e6700 instead. I can't let him have a better processor than me, LOL!

Maybe it is too late but honestly (I hate to say this) but if I were getting a non-gaming computer, I would get a Mac. The only reason I stick with PCs is for gaming. Macs are simply built better and easier for non-techies to use. Just to qualify, I have been anti-mac for a very very long time and have recently come to this decision after many interactions with those machines. Besides, if you have to use windows, some macs can boot up windows now too (I don't know how it runs on them though...).

I like the newer Macs too, and using Boot Camp to run Windows does work pretty well on them. I'm hoping to pick up a Macbook Pro sometime in the near future. The downside to Macs, however, is that they are generally expensive for what you get. For the type of use that ATN has in mind, I think a cheap PC is better suited...

I can get those mac notebooks for real cheap cause I'm a student. Sometimes, if you are at univeristy, your tech center or whatever gets a real good deal on them. Don';t know whether that applies to you or not ryan.
