View Full Version : Nvidia's new graphics card..is it worth it?
I personally dont think the new 7800 gtx pci card isnt with a price tag of 600 bucks  Just wanted to get some opinions on what you guys think about the fastast card on the market (for now). :mp5:

it is about a one-third improvement off of the 6800ultra. if you have to have it get it. however, graphics in games has stagnated for the last year.
me personally am not looking to upgrade my already decent 6800 ultra pci express. I wonder if it surpasses the 512mb 6800 ultra card. :-?
In that last sentence I was referring to the 7800 to the 512mb card :yaya:

HAH! ATI sucks... SLI with 7800s = greatness.

Before we get into an ati vs nvidia war just accept your fate

tip: just say NO to fanboy flames. :flipoff:
if you're spending the money for a top of the line ati/nvidia/whatever, you will be happy.
im happy that nvidia has brought out the 'next' gen. meaning that prices will start falling off on the 6800s. w00t!

i have had both ATI and Nvidia cards each has their quirks but i have not seen any real reason to buy one over the other 2 cards of the same class same money perform the same everyone wants to compare their 6800 to a ati 9200 or compare their x850 to a fx5500 caompare apples to apples and you won't see much difference. now someone will surely post that they see a huge difference between nvidia and ati and give all their links to performance benchmarks blah blah blah the truth of the matter is bf2 and CSS both look great for me with an x600 and CSS looked great with both my fx5200 and fx5500oc so my point is how much difference is your eye going to really notice. and then someone will post about performance and how this cards allows them to play better blah blah blah but again consider that kossori plays on an old system using sdram and he still owns so what advantage does the hot video card give you?

gumby, right now your not going to EVER max out a card like that at 800x600 or even at 1280x1024 because they are limited by CPU.
basically, getting over 200fps is never going to happen because the cpu will only let you spout out a set amount.

and your fps is limited to your refresh rate anyway
I wonder if the min graphics card requirement for unreal 2k7 will be the 7800.

I wonder if the min graphics card requirement for unreal 2k7 will be the 7800. :shock:they had it demo'd on a pair of 6800U's, but they should be able to optimise the code enough to bring it down to only needing a 5--- or 9--- series card and higher.

Hopefully 6800 GT's are down way way by christmas. Because thats gonna be the one thing I want unless I have a job by then.

Top of the line video cards are usually not worth it unless you consider it as a longer-term investment than lesser cards. As is usually the case these days, the cards' capabilities are way ahead of the games. You're pretty much guaranteed the need of a new video card at some point, so unless you have money to blow and/or an ego to stroke, why bother with state-of-the-art?
Oh, and I'll never buy nVidia. Not for performance reasons, mind you, but because they killed 3dfx and support for my ol Voodoo 4.

The first one was Aquamark3, I scored 81,600 with no tweaking. My 6800GT was getting around 72,000 for comparison.
I very briefly started up BF2 at 1024 x 768 with all settings maxed out and was getting 80-100 fps in single player. I'll tackle BF2 more once I get the system tweaked.
I also ran the video stress test for CS:S at 1600 x 1200 with all settings maxed out.160 - 180fps.[quote]

Just for future reference I'm a CIS/CS major, and have been building custom PCs scince I was around 12/13. Obviously I understand to a rather large degree how this stuff works. just thought it'd be an interesting/informative read from some very respectable hardware techs.
As far as things not being able to go over 200 fps....well with my p4 2.66 non HT, 1.25 Gb memory, 6800GT Oc, on an mobo using the 865pe chipset i get around 150-160 fps in BF:V with max setting, with just a few tweaks to teh system. I get over 200 in BF42 with max settings. (Note: there is a line in BF42 and BF:V that restricts to 99.99 fps just flip a 1 to a 0 and you get whatever your system can dish out. Can't remeber where thsi is off the top of my head tho.) I hardly ahve the beefiest harware around, so saying geting over 200 is never goign to happen isn't accurate.

Already getting off topic.
Is the 7800 GTX worth 600? No. Is it worth 500? Yes.
If I were you, i'd wait until the R520 from ATi comes out, then make a decision off of benchmarks (Yes benchmarks). Unless of course you can test both of them in real life. I say just wait. Time tells, but if you wait too long the next next gen will already be out.

and i used 200 as a refrence.
in the end at low resolutions allot of games are cpu locked(halflife series for example) and prevents them from overdrawing the scenes(why would you need 300 fps, when you can't actually tell the diffrence between a stable 60 and a fluxing 120)

Then what was the point of your statement if it was just a random number?
And maybe performance junkies just like to see what their machine can do as far as pumping out frames.
The basic question: Is this card worth getting? It's pretty much the same question posed everytime a new card series comes out. When the 6800, X800 first came out there wasn't much, if anything that could max it out. Now look at BF2. Same thing with the 7800 etc. Right now, is there anything that you NEED this card for? No, not really. In a year or two? Most likely, if you want to continue running things at max settings, Yes.
