i was thinking, rare, but it happens, about a few years ago, there was some controversy, i am not sure if it was over here but certainly in the uk, about some rubber compund or plastic like material which, after being melted, was so toxic it required amputation of the area that it touched...

does anyone have a clue as to what it was called? or if it existed and was not one of my trips to lala land that i seem to make..

thanks

as i said i was just thinking and in a morbid way was looking at burns, acids and bases on wikipedia, and i remember some chap who used to work on trucks say something about it and a couple of news reports too... but i could not remember whether it was a plastic or rubber, or where it was used, i am sure it was a polymer of some kind though

It's possible that it has something to do with HFl - Hydrofluoric Acid

The fluorine competes for Ca2+ ions in your blood, causing hypocalcemia, a potentially deadly condition because Calcium ions are essential in muscle function (including your heart!!).

This would make sense based on a quote from wikipedia about HFl:

"Hydrogen fluoride is released upon combustion of fluorine-containing compounds such as products containing Viton and Teflon parts. Hydrogen fluoride converts immediately to hydrofluoric acid upon contact with moisture."

Then again.. many things are toxic when they hit the skin.. ie: methyl mercury. Very deadly, and a latex glove will not protect you, as one woman found out while working with dimethylmercury during research: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Wetterhahn

i was thinking it was to do with hydroflouric acid, but i thought it waqs worse then that, viton i know is used in certain high temperature/pressure hoses, it may have been that, but as i was reading about it, i saw no references, thanks though, i will continue my search
