GeForce 9800 GX2 - Ultra High End

So I've been doing some research and it looks like the GeForce 9800 GX2 is the one that will top the 8800 GTX Ultra and is being released for sale on March 11th. They will also be releasing a 9800 GTX and a 9800 GTS a little later on. So here is all the stuff I can find on this card and it's brothers.

If this is right it looks like you will need an 8 pin power and a 6 pin power to run this super 9800 GX2 which is essentially two G92 chips (9800 GTX) in one bundle.

For all the praise here is a thought from the negative side... possibly how you look at it. If it's slightly faster than two 8800 GT SLI then when you SLI this bad mother doesn't that me you have the power of FOUR 8800 GTs? Hmmmm.

Save up your pennies folks if you want this card. I bet it comes in at $500 - $600 starting and that's on the first day. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes up over $100 more within the first week. Obviously if you buy this card on the first couple of days you do so at your own risk since all performance reviews at this point seem to be less than detailed.

I think I might be waiting on that 9800 GTX or the GTS. The GTX sounds yummy but the GTS will probably also be very popular.

if it were me, i'd wait till the next GPU from Nvidia comes out later this year. the 9800 is more of a stop gap and 8800GTX are more than adequate for todays games. plus, as a consumer you need to start looking forward to DisplayPort... not HDMI (ick).

Hey Alf, give us a link on these new Nvidia GPUs that are coming out later this year. Because with all my research and reading on graphics cards I have never found any talk about a Gxx GPU chip or a new series of cards this year. If they exist I would like to read about them. G92- G96 seem to be already used supposedly in the 9xxx series GPUs. No one has factual info on it though. It's like they can't make up their minds on which chip is where.

Edit add: I found something about a G100 GPU chip.

The nVIDIA G100 is to be released in Q4 2008 or Q1 2009 timeframes..

So not much info on this new GPU series and since we know that the release dates are fluid and not set it probably won't be until 2009 when any of these new GPUs come out. So I think as long as you have a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard you should be fine for whatever comes out in 2009. I'm still going to get a graphics card this year and I'll upgrade later if it's a huge increase in performance. Until then I'm not going to worry about it.

Drayu's 8800 GTS 512 isn't all that bad so don't feel bad. You have everything you need for that nice graphics card upgrade in 2009. Until then you have nothing to worry about IMO. Now the 7800 GT is a bit out dated. I know that feeling since I have a X1950 PRO myself which is kind of like a 7900 GT in a way. Hence my new PC build any time now.

So many forums and articles calling the 9800 series the G100 chip. Others calling it the G98 or G96. Then others are saying the G100 is the next generation after these. At this point I don't think anyone knows what the fuck they are talking about on chip names. Until the damn thing is out in the stores and has real reviews and benchmarks I think we just have to expect mediocre performance and hope for better.

yeah, i can't say anything i know about it other than "it's freakn' sweet". sorry bro... that being said, IMO it would be wise to save a little $$$ get one or two 8800GTX or GTS cards and wait.

Since I don't resolve anything 1600*1200+, my 8800GT is just fine. The gains really didn't start to significantly show themselves until the AA testing, too.

i am going to wait until the drivers are out on the 25th and i see some new benchmarks with the drivers that are supposed to be boosting this card a bunch

i take all of these benchmarks with a grain of salt as none of the drivers out actually support this card yet, so i think there is a lot of potential for this card to definatly throw out some huge numbers once drivers mature and support the card

While the article has a point I do believe the opinions are a bit premature as ideal drivers are still being tweaked. Also know that the 9800GX2 is NOT and I repeat NOT an entry or mid level graphics card. You are paying an absolute premium price to squeeze out every last gigaflop from the CPU/Memory. The price goes up very quickly from mid range to high end to super high end.

How much does it cost to get a car that can do 100 mph on the road? Now how much does it cost to get a car that does 200 mph? Now what is the cost for a car that does 225+ mph. The cost between the first car and the second car is about double. The cost between the second car and the third car is more than double closer to triple if not more.

If the theory works for cars why would we expect anything different in any other consumer market involving technology and the advancements of it? Also as far as the comparison with consoles go, the moderately priced 8800 GTS 512mb can achieve similar if not better performance. Anything above that from now on is gravy over current Xbox360 and PS3 consoles. It all depends on the programmers, developers and how effective the drivers are.
