avoid basic, go for at least vista64 home premium or ultimate. FYI they are running $100-$200 on Newegg for the OEM versions.
vista 64 ultimate: $189 Free 3 day ship (look at combos too, may get some good deals)

vista 64 home premium: $111.99 Free 3 day shipping

Do the current games run ok in 64bit vista?

current games I think are better. The biggest issue you will have will be finding drivers, but they are out there somewhere or are coming.

I bought the full version not the OEM and it came with a disk for the 32 bit and the 64 bit. If you have Ultimate you should have both.

thanks for the inputs guys, i went and picked up a ultimate version for $34 (only one they had). those of you at a traditional university should be able to do the same, but pay much less (like $5 or $10). go to your univeristy bookstore and ask for "microsoft site license software". they should have office and other goodies for cheap too. all you need to do is show your student ID and sign a paper.
according to MS website, all versions of vista should be 64bit, except for the starter edition
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/default.mspx
but for some reason, my cd just says vista ultimate 32-bit
guess i'll just reinstall my xp pro heh

ya crotch ~ sometimes
in VISTA 64 there is a separate folder that Vista 32 bit stuff installs into. still may have driver issues, though.

Not all colleges and universities are part of the MSDNAA program. At my university, only certain majors have access to MS software for free... engineers, computer scientists, and members of the business college. And even then I think all we get is Vista Business. There is volume licensing at my bookstore, but it's a far cry from $5 or even $35...
If what I was told is true, all the Vista DVDs have all the versions of Vista on them, but the key determines what version gets installed.

I bought OEM and if it had option for 64, I don't remember but I think I would've on install, Quess I will put it in and check it, now that Gruthar said it may be there.

Was looking on the MS website, and noticed that if you have any version of Vista except Basic, you can send for a DV or CD-ROM that will let you have whatever Vista you have in 64 bit, that is, if it isn't allready. Anybody know how much this costs, cause if it's cheap, I might do that, cause my Home Premium is only runnin in 32 bit. Friggen Microsoft. Here's the link http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/64bit.mspx
