I know someone was asking about this. Mod tools are out. Everything you need to make custom maps in there, too.

The only bummer I can see from this is that I see a lot of maps coming out with too many opportunities for camping.

I can tell that the map designers really put in a lot of effort to strategically block camping spots for about 50% of major pinch points, doorways, hallways, corners, and capture points.

It's actually one of the things I really like about the game.

Personally, I'd love to see the FPS makers hold a mapping contest. Take the best 10 maps and add them to an expansion pack or make them downloadable. Give the winners prizes and stuff... Unreal Tournament 2004 had a mod contest ('Make Something Unreal') and it seemed to be a pretty good idea.

Lack of expansions, great new maps, mods, etc, has been the bane of all FPS games.

Due to the size of the maps in CoD4, all I see is one busy map after another busy map. Maps are too limited in size IMO giving it a Counter Strike feel. More twitch less strategy. I think that's what turned me off the most after playing it for a while. There was no rhyme or reason to attack and defense. I guess I'm too much a BF fan.

You guys do realize that now that the mod tools are out maps of all shapes sizes and designs will be coming out? Big maps, small maps, maps with no camping spots, maps with oodles of camping spots, maps with no cover, maps with so much cover you can't walk. sniping maps, twitch maps, maps with no purpose at all.

If you think the game developers put months of thought into the MP map structures, you are sadly mistaken. In my experience the modded and custom maps are ALWAYS better than the stock ones.

I agree that Mods are usually much better than the retail game maps. However I don't know the limitations of the engine. There might be a reason why the maps are as small as they are. Simply because the lag on anything bigger might be pretty bad. or greater number of players on the same map. I'm sure there is a limitation on size and number of players. I really hope the mods do well because the current game is kind of *yawn* for me now.

I think the maps are small not because of any engine limitation but because IW know that people with crappy comps will buy the game and bitch if they get on the MP and it lags. People with decent and good comps will be able to run big maps fine. The people with crappy comps will have trouble but that will be on the modders and not on IW.

They save face this way... In actuality, that is a smart way to sell games. They want their audience to be as broad as possible. The fact that their engine still runs with DX9 and does so with great graphics is one of the reason it is getting better reviews than games like Crysis or Bioshock. They did a lot with a little. Crysis does a lot with a lot and makes even the best computers lag... who wants to deal with that?
