View Full Version : Any tricks or tips to flying a heli?

Im asking because I'm really awful at flying heli's. I have my joystick setup but once I get off the ground its seems like I over compensate for every maneuver I make. I have the sensitivity set to default. Should I turn it down or up?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I have the same problem, I used to be able to fly in poe no prob, but now I cant, that is what I would do(am going to do) is play with the sensitivity first, then go from there.

first of all, turn up your yaw and pitch factors in all of your options, common, vehicle, plane, heli, etc... this will help TONS...

secondly ... throttle is 90% of flying the heli...

turning - turning fast is one of two ways - A. cut your speed to a hover and you can use your rudder to spin like mad... or B. pitch your chopper to the side and pull back on the stick and you can turn extremely fast....

forward flight... when you are moving over 200 km/hr you really loose all rudder control... so turning must be done by banking left or right... just be gental... and lead everything... you wanna go right... bank right before you actually want to turn... and once you start banking... bring it back....

Hope some of this helped...

it did help, nut on my options screen i cant find a control setting for rudder. In POE the option was there and i could at least turn. Now i take off from the carrier and befuddle my way to a flag and then when we get over it I say too my 3 or 4 passengers "Everyone parachute, because i am............" btw, i would never do that to a warishell regular. If guys I dont knwo are hitting the "I need a ride button" repeatdly, oh youll get the ride on Jeff airlines, you just wont get the landing.

rudder is "steer left" and "steer right"

Suggested Sensitivities:

Mouse and Keyboard: 2.0
Joystick: 1.0

That's from the Prima guide, tried both and they both work like a champ. Alot easier to fly then, just take it slow and fly with purpose. Aot of people I've ridden with are all over the place in choppers, people like Von and myself tend to be a bit slower and not do hot maneuvers with them but tend to get them mroe on target. My only problem now is judging distance for my gunner alot better.

Practice, practice and more practice.for people without natural skill.

you basically have to change your way of thinking while flying a chopper.

the biggest mistake i see people make while flying them is they think they control like planes, but they don't, you have to alter your thinking from going foreward to going up and make sure you don't go beyond 60degrees of tilt in any direction(yes i know i go way beyond that but i'm "gifted")

want an easy way to pratice without starting the game up, grab a basketball and a baseball, put the baseball on top of the basketball and put your hands on each side of the basket ball, balance the baseball on top of the basketball as long as possible. helps get used to not over compensating.

Bonez, you're an awesome pilot, I'll give you that, but after flying as your gunner you leave something to be desired in stability and target approach. And I don't mean this harshly, just saying I have the worse time hitting anything as your gunner because you are always zooming in and out of the scenery at high speed so it goes something like:

"Ooo Oooo, Targets"
"Ok N/M then" (as we scream over the targets and past or around before the chain gun can even spin up)

Leet skill with flying is cool and all, but doesn't do much when your gunner just sees the enemy armor and infantry as blurs underneath them :).

well none of ya call targets.

that and nobody likes my surfboard turn, makes them sick or somthing.

I'll just say talk to Gorro about chopper piloting. Other than not knowing the map and location of hills and large structures we killed quite alot of people last night, and only was taken down once by AA. Though I do have a problem with my camera button being right next to my flare button. Accidentally hit both at the same time last night and caused all kinds of problems. But no, every armor we came across he had a perfect shot with the guided missle. Only other problem we had was me getting a wee bit close to where infantry were (due to my judging of distance not being the greatest yet) so he got no joy on seeing them. Now Von, that is someone I hope to become as good as if not surpass in chopper piloting.

Hey thanks for those throttle tips! Using that combined with the rudder for balance and i can now succesfully pilot a blackhawk! It not uber or anything but I can at least get my squad from point A to B and land. I proved this by doing it many times there and back to the carrier. Thanks dude. I tried the gnuships but had to maintain about 50% throttle in order to hang on to it.

Best thing start with the blackhawk, it's less jittery and a lot easier to fly, flying any troop carrier is about keeping a steady platform for your gunners to do there job, call targets you see in front of you for the gunners as well.

But a slow steady approach works best with these helo's. The only time leet flying is needed is the "oh shit bogey on my tail" time.

Attack helo's are faster, more agile and deadlier, but again use them like the armed forces use them.
Hang low, use cover, pop up and nail targets from a distance. The only time to get fast and dirty is if your chasing something or racing to cap a flag.

Far to many people in my view use the attack helo's the wrong way, but hay they are the glory hunters. I even use mine to help the armour out, but do advance recon/anti helo support.
You just have to see the ammount of times an enemy attack helo bugg's out when he sees 2 tanks/apc's and a cobra over head.

But hay my old man's a heli pilot for over 30 years and he thinks i suck at flying.

But find what works for you man and work from there.

i have my sensitivities set way high for the helos.. Ask DemonEyes.. he was riding gunner while we played the DAMN map.. He thought i had flew into the damn. He didnt know that i was taking hits from 2 AA positions infront of me.. I stood the 'hawk on its tail and dropped it to the right side down the face of the dam, gathered much speed in descent and pulled out at the bottom and scooted it over the hills all the while he was wrneching away telling me not to fly into buildings. that being said.. the more you practice the higher you can increase those levels. You want that ship to respond when you need her to.. I am still not likeing the rotational speed though too used to the Commanche and Havoc of POE where they handled line a finely tuned racing rig.. however you twitcdh the worng way and your ground chuck in the dirt...

btw as stated in a previous post.. I orbit to the Left.... When orbiting to the right ... those damn trees and buildings seem to get taller and try knocking me outta the sky
