I use AVG freeware for my rig, but i am careful and i set everything to "high" ~ i am still not sure that i am virus free ~ and that is with near-constant tweaking and checking.
So, the reason i am asking ~ my father-in-law to be is needing some protection and he is running either XP or Vista; and his wife is on it most of the time ~ just surfing the web and doing some emailing.
Assuming that they all catch the boogers really quick ~ Stability and ease of use are the two most important variables.

Read that thread. Also check out the following links for some third party comparisons.

EDIT: Yaknow, with all our threads about anti-virus products, we should probably combine all our knowledge into a single sticky'd thread to make things easier on people with questions.

avg is good till it hinks you are on a network... i get those annoying "you maybe breaching your TOS by using AVG free on a networked computer"
i contacted the company and they were saying that any networked pc cannot use the avg free software...
after that i gave up and went back to avast....

thanks for the feedback. I'll be talking her into keeping the AVG that is on the system (i built it for them) and just updating and running it proper like.
the thing is, she wanted to be able to wrap something up and set it under the tree.
oh well, she is on her own ... unless you have any ideas?
